There are various ways in which to buy action and adventure DVDs and videos nowadays -- some people are happy to pick up second hand copies to get hold of rare or deleted films (or to save themselves a bit of cash!) whilst others like to buy new. And, of course, this sector is also really popular with DVD and video collectors as there is so much choice in this genre.

There is a wealth of choice in the action and adventure genre -- from classic movies from decades ago through to modern films and TV series. Fans of this genre can pick and choose from blockbusters, independent movies and entire TV series so there really will be something here for any action and adventure buff.

It's quite common for people to simply buy the occasional action and adventure DVD or video because they have seen it on TV or in the cinema and would like to have it to keep or to watch a couple more times. This is also a great way to catch up with films and TV series that you might have missed but which sound like good viewing.

The real advantage of action and adventure films and TV series is that this genre has programmes and films to suit all ages. Many of the films and series here are targeted at kids and families which could make watching an action adventure DVD or video a really family TV treat! From the ever popular A-Team (hard to believe this was some 30 years ago!) to the latest Transformers film, there is a huge choice here. Some films and series, however, are designed for a more adult audience -- for example the Die Hard series starring Bruce Willis -- but it's still great to have something good to watch when the kids have finally gone to bed!

What to think about when buying action and adventure DVDs and videos
It's quite easy -- especially if buying DVDs and videos online -- to get caught out and to end up buying a pirated version of a film or TV series. These copies are not legal and, apart from anything else, may be of inferior quality from a sound and vision perspective.

If looking for an action and adventure DVD or video that the whole family can watch then remember to check the rating to see if it is age appropriate. Some of these films can scare young kids as, by their very nature, they can be quite violent and threatening so it's wise to be careful.

Finally, check to see what region your DVD player will play when buying action and adventure DVDs. You may find that your player only plays Region 2 DVDs which are those products targeted at the UK and Europe although some players can play DVDs from multiple regions. Many modern players can also be re-configured to support multi-region playback, but this usually requires some help from your local AV or hi-fi retailer -- and some cost. With the ever reducing cost of DVD players, it may only be marginally more expensive to replace the player itself.

How to successfully buy action and adventure DVDs and videos second hand
If you are looking to buy action and adventure DVDs and videos in a second hand shop or online then make sure you check out the whole package before you buy. If buying a DVD check that it is not too scratched to make sure that it will play OK. If buying a video check that the casing is not broken or too wobbly and that the tape inside looks OK. Don't forget to check if the case comes with the right inserts.

Buying second hand action and adventure DVDs and videos online can be a bit more tricky. You can't after all actually handle and see the DVD or video for yourself. This can pose problems for collectors in particular where quality has a specific bearing on value. The easiest way to assess the quality of any DVD or video is to ask the seller specific questions. Ask them if they are aware of any problems and if the DVD or video plays OK. Bear in mind that not everybody owns a VCR anymore so you may have to make a purchase in good faith if the seller cannot check the video out before you buy it.

You'll generally find that most people selling second hand DVDs and videos are essentially honest. Some may sell off their titles periodically to make room at home or to raise a little extra money. Some may sell off DVDs or videos they no longer watch or like or may be getting rid of unwanted presents. A common reason for selling off videos, for example, is if the seller is getting rid of their VCR and replacing their entire collection with DVDs. And, of course, many small businesses make their living by selling second hand DVDs and videos over the Internet to consumers.

Don't be afraid to ask to see a digital photo of the item you want to buy before you commit to anything -- this will at least give a quick impression of how it looks. Do watch out for pirate copies of DVDs and videos. If buying a modern edition of a film or TV series look for a hologram on the case as this generally shows that it is a legitimate copy. Finally, beware of sellers who are selling multiple copies of the same DVD or video -- this could mean that they are selling illegal copies.
