Alfa Romeo is an Italian car company which is passionate about creating beautiful, technologically advanced vehicles. It has always enjoyed a great deal of success on the race track and has recently experienced something of a commercial revival.

History of Alfa Romeo
Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (A.L.F.A.) was a Milan based automobile company started in 1910. Its heritage as a Milan based company is still seen in its badge, which features design from the coat of arms of the Visconti family, a powerful Milan based dynasty. Nicola Romeo bought the ALFA factory in 1915 and Alfa Romeo came into existence. The first Alfa Romeo car was the Torpedo 20-30 HP which began production in 1920. Subsequently models that achieved racing success were developed, such as the 40-60 HP. In 1924 the first ever World Driving Championships took place and Alfa Romeo Grand Prix took first place, cementing the reputation of Alfa Romeo as a manufacturer of sports cars.

The company's reputation, however could not ward off financial difficulties, which forced company restructuring that was not supported by the chairman, Nicola Romeo. He, therefore, left the company in 1928. In 1932 the company was taken over by the Institute for Industrial reconstruction (IRI) and the thirties saw Alfa Romeo turn into a lucrative motor company, due to increased production of technologically advanced cars.

As an Italian company it was inevitable that the European political situation during the late 30's and 40's would have an effect on production. The Second World War and Mussolini's leadership forced a shift from racing car production to aircraft engine production. Following struggles during the war, including bombing of its factories, Alfa Romeo began to rebuilding in 1945. The company managed to pull off a fairly quick turn around in fortune. Renowned for its beauty, the 6C 2500 won the 1949 competition for elegance, the Alfa 159 was launched in 1950, and became a very successful production car and the racing branch of the company continued to achieve many successes in the World Championships.

The next two decades were relatively good for Alfa Romeo, new ranges were developed with much critical acclaim. An example of this was the Alfa 2600 which was described as an effortless, high quality vehicle. The 1970' s saw some shake ups in the management of Alfa Romeo but despite the restructuring and some financial worries, Alfa Romeo continued with sporting triumphs, the Alfa 33 TT 12 was World constructors champion twice during this decade. The lack of growth in the commercial sector of Alfa Romeo, however, forced a buy out by the FIAT group in 1986 but this did not prevent new models being developed under the Alfa Romeo name. In recent years Alfa Romeo has been revived, the 156 won car of the year in 1997 and the 147 won car of the year in 2001.

Alfa Romeo Models
  • 147: The 147 is an eye-catching car, the 2008 version is well equipped, including 17" alloy wheels, CD player and air conditioning. The engine options available include a 1.6 TS petrol or 1.9 JTDM diesel. However the 147 is only rated as average for breakdowns and faults in a number of different surveys. 2008 sees the launch of a 149, the replacement for the 147.
  • 159: The 159 is also considered to be a good looking sporty car. Unlike the 147 it performed very well in safety tests. Road tests highlight its handling and comfort along with reduced CO2 emissions, pushing it into a lower tax bracket. A four wheel drive option is available. One of the few complaints is that no spare tyre comes as standard!
  • Brera: Available with a 2.2 JTS, 3.2 petrol or 2.4 JTD turbo diesel, the Brera is also considered to be a striking car. It is thought to be balanced and to perform well. It is a well equipped car but some consider that the room inside the cabin is quite limited.
  • GT Coupe: Another attractive car. 1.9 l and 2.0 l petrol versions are available. The car drives well and is spacious inside. Some problems have been reported with the water pump, which can potentially damage the engine.
  • Spider: The Spider was launched in 2007 having been named Cabrio of the year in 2006. An attractively designed car, with good handling at high speeds. It is smooth to drive and spacious for the model type.
Things to consider
Any car is an expensive purchase and, as such, some thought and consideration should go into which car is the right one. Cars can be bought new or used, from dealers, private sales and auctions. Many people wishing to sell a car privately will put advertisements in publications. Private sales are not protected by the same legislation as industry sales, so it is even more important to ensure that the car is 100% and that all the documentation is present with the car.

That said, a private sale may offer a financially better deal as there is no dealer margin to consider. If you are thinking about purchasing a car, the things to check are for any obvious signs of damage and rust on the bodywork this is particularly important with many older Alfa models which were prone to rust. Always test drive the vehicle (make sure you are properly insured to do so), check that everything works, listen for any strange rattles or problems that might become apparent when driving. It is generally best not to go alone to drive a car, a second opinion (ideally from a qualified mechanic) could be very valuable.
