This can actually save you a lot of money and can also help you if you are collecting. It's often easier to pick up cult, rare or deleted films and TV series second hand than to find them new.

If you are buying second hand DVDs or videos in a store then check the disc and/or tape first before buying anything. DVDs should be scratch free and video cassettes should be undamaged. Obviously you cannot perform this first hand check if you're buying second hand animated or anime DVDs or videos over the Internet but this should not be a problem.

All you need to do is to make sure that you get as much information as possible from the seller. Ask them about the condition of the DVD or video and ask them if it plays OK. Make sure to find out why they are selling it and ask if it is an original copy or a pirated one. Ask to see a digital photo of the item before you buy it -- watch out for stock photos here as you need to see the actual item. This will help you assess general quality and will also give you an idea of whether it is an original copy. If you see a hologram on the case, for example, then you can be reasonably sure that this is original and not pirated.

People sell on DVDs and videos for many reasons in this sector. Parents, for example, may sell on their kid's DVDs and videos when they outgrow them. People who move over to DVDs from video may sell their videos when they get rid of their VCR. And, of course, there are a lot of collectors and small businesses out there that will sell them on a regular basis.
