Having a baby is one of the greatest experiences in anyones lifetime. There are so many decisions to be made! Parents must select a hospital, a midwife and make many other decisions regarding the babys health, safety, comfort, and happiness. Parents will need to purchase baby furniture and other baby goods for the babys care. During the nine months of pregnancy, you will have plenty of time to make such decisions but that time will pass incredibly fast. Here are a few things to think about before the baby arrives.

How to Choose a Cot
A newborn baby sleeps up to 16 hours per day! So a good cot is very important and you must purchase one before the baby is born. When picking out a cot, make sure the mattress is soft, but not saggy. It should not bend easily. The rails should be close together so that the baby cannot put his or her head through them. Experts recommend that babies not use pillows or blankets as they can be smothered by them. Always consult your GP and other appropriate professionals with regard to your baby's safety. It is usually better to dress the baby warmly in a romper suit (a warm baby wrapper that consists of long sleeves, a torso covering fastened with snaps, and leggings with attached foot covers) and put him or her to sleep on their back with no bedding. Views as to the safest sleeping position vary so again please consult a professional.

How to Choose a Baby Monitor
A baby monitor is vital so that parents can monitor the room when the baby is asleep. These are available in a wide variety of formats including monitors with movement sensitive mats that check for regular breathing and natural movement and raise the alarm if movement stops. Digital monitors offer the advantage of reduced radio interference and increased clarity. Some monitors are two way, allowing you to communicate with your baby without entering the room.

How to Choose Baby Bedroom Furniture
You will need a changing table. Be sure the table is at a comfortable height for parents and carers to use. It should have a rim all the way around the top to reduce the risk of the baby falling off. Be sure the table is stable. Its also helpful to have drawers below the table for storing nappies and other changing supplies.

The baby will need a chest of drawers to keep clothes in. Again, be sure it is stable and will not tip over.

Some people also find it useful to have a rocking chair in the babys room. There are stringent safety requirements for modern furniture but be sure, if purchasing an antique or second hand piece that the furniture is not painted with any paint containing lead.

How to Choose a High Chair
The baby will need a high chair for feeding times. These are a regular cause of injury to infants, so choose carefully. The chair should be stable and not top-heavy. It helps to have a safety belt for the child. Again, the chair should not be painted with paint containing lead. The food tray should not be too easy to lift up or the baby might fall out or catch his or her fingers in the hinges. A newborn can be easily fed in a child safety seat, placed on a table but never leave the child alone, even in the safety seat!

How to Choose a Playpen
Caring for a baby is an incredible responsibility. Babies should not be left alone except when safely asleep in a cot or a secure playpen. If a parent needs to take a phone call or a quick shower, a playpen can thus be very helpful. There are both wood and 'pop-up' mesh playpens. Both seem to work well, but be sure any rails are too small and close together for the child to put his or her head through them or get arms or legs entangled. The edges of a playpen should be smooth and finished. The floor should be strong, level, and smooth. Most also come with a cushioned mat for the floor which must display a label confirming adherence to fire retardent standards.

How to Choose a Pushchair and Pram
When taking a walk or shopping with a baby, a pushchair or pram is essential. They should be sturdy and roll smoothly. Check any collapsible mechanisms to make sure the baby cannot get his or her fingers caught. There should be a brake for the wheels that can be set when stopped. The sides should be high enough so that the baby cannot fall out. A safety belt in a pushchair is a good idea. There is a vast range of pushchairs and prams, from the budget to the exotic, some at frightening prices. It may be worth the investment in a high end model if you are particularly active or expect to be out and about a great deal.

How to Choose a Car Seat
One of the most important pieces of baby safety equipment is a car seat. Never drive without the baby being properly secured in a correctly sized and fitted car seat. Ever. Choose a seat with built-in locking clips and non-twisting straps. Get a pro to help you install the seat the first time as they are often incorrectly installed. Read the instructions regards the installation carefully when installing.

Use your baby's height, weight, and age to choose the car seat. Rear-facing car seats are used until the infant is about 20 pounds. Car seats are used rear-facing until the baby is around a year old and weighs at least 20 pounds. Never use a rear facing car set in the front of the car or where it may be within reach of an airbag. The baby's head should be one inch or more below the top of the car seat when rear-facing. For front-facing seats, the tops of the baby's ears should be below the seat top.

Never skimp on the cost or quality of a car safety seat. One day it may save your childs life. Not all car seats fit every vehicle. The seat you choose must be installed tightly, at the right angle, with less than one inch of side-to-side movement. Most shops will allow you to take a floor model of a car seat to your vehicle to check the fit. If not, make sure there is a return policy in case it doesnt fit.

Purchasing Baby-Feeding and Care Implements
You will need lots of things to feed and care for your baby. You will need a breast pump if you are breast feeding. You will need bottles and cleaning equipment if you are bottle feeding. You will need a baby seat, dummies, nappies and nappy changing items, toys, baby blankets, and clothes for the baby. You should also purchase some sturdy safety gates to prevent your child from falling down stairs or entering rooms that are off limits to him or her. Later, you may also need safety corners to protect a toddler from sharp table corners etc. together with cupboard and drawer locks to prevent access to dangerous contents such as kitchen utensils, knives, household cleaning chemicals etc.

Most parents buy disposable nappies which are easy to use and clean up after although from an environmental and cost perspective you may want to consider traditional nappies. You will also need baby powder, lotion and wet wipes. You will need several baby blankets, a baby seat, and a dozen or so bibs. Babies enjoy teething rings, rattles, cot mobiles, and stuffed toys. You will need T-shirts, romper suits / baby grows, socks, shoes and warm hats three to six of each. It never hurts to have more than six T-shirts, gowns, and romper suits / baby grows.

Conclusion
Use the nine months of pregnancy to prepare your babys nursery and purchase appropriate furniture, clothes, feeding and changing supplies, toys, a safety car seat, and other baby care implements. No doubt friends and relatives will give you gifts of needed (and entirely un-needed!) items during this time. None of us are ever ready for the reality (and joy) of a newborn baby but at least when baby arrives, youll be ready with all of the essential equipment!
