Baby car seats are harnesses that are used to secure infants when travelling in a car. The purpose of such seats is to restrain the child when the car is moving, and to offer some protection if the vehicle is involved in a crash. As the primary function of a car seat is safety, they are required by law, it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that the child is correctly restrained. Car seats are usually sold for a given age or weight category .

Car seat law
A Child's car seat must conform to ECE Regulation 44-03. A child under three years of age is required to be restrained by a seat that is suitable for the child's size. A baby should have a backward facing travel seat, although, it must be stressed that these seats cannot be used in the front passenger seat if there is a passenger airbag.

Second hand child seats
It is generally advised that child seats are not bought second hand from a completely unknown source, as any damage that may have been inflicted on the seat in the past may not be obvious, and therefore the buyer may be unaware of a faulty seat. Before purchasing a child seat it should be carefully checked for any damage and it is essential that it is supplied with the manufacturer's instructions so that the seat can be fitted properly.

Car seat categories
Car seats are split into a number of categories, depending on the age or weight of the child. They are often described as follows:
  • Group 0: For babies up to 10kg, or from birth to 6-9 months.
  • Group 0+: For babies up to 13kg, or for babies up to 12-15 months.
  • Group 1: For children in the weight range 9-18kg. This is usually children from approximately 9 month to 4 years.
  • Group 2: For children in the weight range 15-25kg. Usually about 4-6 years old.
  • Group 3: For children in the weight range 22-36 kg. This is for children of 6-11 years old.
The seats available for groups 2 and 3 are booster seats.

Types of Car seat
Car seats can be purchased in a large variety of colours from a number of different brands. Cushioning is often built in around the neck and head, particularly important for the support of young babies who cannot yet support their head themselves. The types of car seat available are:
  • Rear facing car seat: A car seat that faces backward. This is required for babies who cannot control themselves in a sitting position as they give support to the babies back and neck.
  • Forward facing car seat: A baby can progress into a car seat that faces forwards once they are able to sit up. Forward facing car seats are usually permanently fitted..
  • Transportable car seats: Car seats can often be portable, doubling up as a baby carrier or carry cot. Such seats will have a handle making them easy to transport. These transportable seats are usually the rear facing seats designed for very young babies.
Buying car seats
The cost of new car seats can vary greatly. The large variation in cost can reflect the brand or material of the carrier, along with practical issues such as the presence of a foot warmer or an adjustable carry handle. It should be remembered that the most important thing about the seats is safety, whether or not they fit the baby and the car is independent of the price, therefore the most expensive seat is not necessarily the best for you.

Baby travel accessories
The following accessories may be of use when transporting young children:
  • Sun visors: Sun visors can be bought that either fit to the travel chair or the car window, in order to shield the baby on bright days.
  • Play trays and cup holders: Can be fitted to the seat, proving useful for additional storage.
  • Additional straps and padding: Can be bought to enhance the basic car seat for comfort and safety.
  • Car Toys: Car toys such as mobiles can be bought to keep babies entertained, these are usually brightly coloured to stimulate the baby.
  • Car seat covers: Rain covers and insect nets can be fitted to transportable car seats to protect the baby from outside hazards! Car seat sleeping bags can be used to stop babies from getting too cold.
  • Baby car mirrors: When driving with a baby in the backseat and no other adults, it is useful to be able to see the baby throughout the journey. Adjusting the rear view mirror or turning around to do this is dangerous, therefore baby car mirrors are available. Double mirrors can also be bought which allow the baby to see the adult too. It is settling for the baby to be able to look at their parent and this may prove useful, particularly if you are trying to keep the baby quiet over a long journey!
