Bentley motor cars are a global symbol for status and luxury. Many of the models retain a classic character, which can, by some, be considered to be old fashioned although the latest models have aggressively contemporary styling. The ostentatious nature of certain models, along with the price make the cars a favourite amongst footballers and WAG's, reinforcing the company's reputation for producing flamboyant vehicles.

The History of Bentley
Bentley motors Ltd was formed by Walter Bentley in 1919. Bentley had experience building piston engines. A major breakthrough made by Bentley was to use aluminium in the design of the engines. Aluminium was advantageous due to its lightweight properties and such engines, known as the Bentley Rotary, were used in Sopwith Camel planes during WW1. The end of the war allowed Bentley to follow his dream to build automobiles. He had very high standards as both an engineer and a driver and with this ambition he developed the Bentley 3 litre engine. The first Bentley was finally sold in 1921 after years of perfecting the car, which Bentley wanted to be the best in its class.

During the 1920's Bentley designed cars that achieved a great deal of success in motor sport, their first win was at Le Mans in 1924 and more trophies were to follow. In 1931 Bentley was impacted by the depression and was taken over by Rolls Royce. However the Bentley name continued to stand for luxury and up to the minute technological advances, Walter Bentley himself was involved in the design of what he considered to be the best car he had designed a sports car, which was luxurious powerful and relatively silent. The period during WW2 slowed the progress of the development of new Bentley models, although production continued to take place and in 1946 the Bentley Mark VI began to be produced at a new factory in Crewe. This car became one of the best selling Bentley vehicles.

Bentley suffered from living in the shadow of its parent company, Rolls Royce, with many Rolls Royce features being introduced into the Bentley range. In particular the T-series developed in the 1960's was thought by Bentley enthusiasts to be too far removed from the Bentley heritage. The Bentley drivers club (BDC) was a group of thousands of Bentley owners who wished to retain the character of the early years of Bentley motors. The support of the BDC convinced Rolls Royce to continue production of Bentleys despite a large decline in sales.

The 1980's saw a turn around in the fortunes of Bentley, largely thanks to the launch of the powerful, fast, Bentley Mulsanne Turbo, which was a commercial and critical success. In 1998 VW took over Bentley and were willing to support the Bentley vision, working with new technology to develop the brand into the 21st century.

Bentley Models
All Bentley motorcars are designed to be ostentatious and this is apparent in their relatively flamboyant style.
  • Arnage: The current Arnage has a 4.4 l V8 engine built by BMW, this engine results in a powerful car capable of carry 5 passengers in considerable luxury.
  • Azure convertible: This car is considered to be more up to date than some other Bentley models. Although it still retains its classic British style. Its 6750cc V8 engine devours fuel but delivers staggering performance figures despite the car's almost truck-like weight.
  • Continental GT: An elegant fast car, the "Speed" model launched in 2007 is the most powerful Bentley to date. The engine is 6.0 litre and is complimented by a 4 wheel drive system. This car can achieve 0-60 in 4.6 s, and reviews have been very positive. The carbon dioxide emissions have also been reduced, by improving the engine efficiency. The only significant problem that has been reported in some GTs is the failing of the window aerials and heating elements, which require the replacement of the entire rear windscreen.
  • GT convertible: Without doubt more attractive with the hood down, the convertible version of the GT definitely has the wow factor: a luxurious car unsurprisingly popular with premiership footballers and CEOs alike.
  • Flying Spur: The flying spur is a 4 door saloon that was launched in 2005, it shares its engine with the Continental GT: a 6.0l turbo engine. The Flying Spur has been proven to reach speeds in excess of 200 mph. The interiors are contemporary although some Bentley traditionalists may feel that they are a little 'bling' in catering for the global moneyed marketplace.
Things to consider
Buying a car requires a lot of care and thought. Many people will pay more for a car than any other purchase, except for perhaps their home, so it should be carefully considered. The world of car buying is complex and it is difficult to know who to trust when purchasing a car. In order to try and determine the best car to buy it is a good idea for a prospective car buyer to plan ahead. The first thing for the buyer to do is figure out what is needed from the car. What size, price and type of car is required? It is a good idea for the buyer to do some research to determine common faults in the car and to check for these when viewing the car. Test driving the car is also important to look for mechanical and electrical problems, as well as sensing any odd smells or noises. It is also essential that the car comes with a full service history and relevant paper work.

Since Bentleys are, by their very nature, mechanically and electronically complex and the asking price is likely to be high, it is important that any car is checked by a mechanic with a good working knowledge of the model in question.
