Biographies are widely available, mainly in printed form, from a number of publishers, covering a wide range of subject areas and a great deal of historical ground. Biographies cover detailed information on famous people recording the significant events in their lives, often in chronological order. Biographies often detail the achievements, awards, relationships, problems, times of adversity, interests and connections of their subject famous person. They are usually both interesting and informative and are far more popular today than they used to be. Production has thus intensified to the point where there are a huge range of biographies out there from the old dusty, thick books (which could be collectors items or of antique value) on various historical figures from all over the world -- which were most often written posthumously -- to the current biographies that are a reflection of current life wherein celebrities carefully construct their own biographies (often writing autobiographies) or have their agent read through before it goes to the printers.

Biographies may thus give you the low down on Leonardo Da Vinci and how he created the Mona Lisa through to everything you ever wished to know about Jordan and insights into Katie and Peter's marriage. So, if you want to read a biography on a famous person the best way to check to see if one is available or has been written is to look through the various categories.

Sports Biographies
There are many sports biographies available to read. These range from sporting legends including past Olympics champions from all over the world such as Linford Christie and Kris Akabussi to sportsmen and women who have yet to retire from their chosen field. Some of the most famous biographies are sports biographies such as that of Mohammed Ali which is an outstanding book in its own right. Other biographies are written about boxers, golfers, swimmers and a significant proportion are about footballers. Some of these footballers are now retired from the profession but their significant contribution has caused people to want to read about them. There are of course biographies available on footballers such as Best, Charlton and Maradona. However, there are also biographies on current stars such as Beckham and Owen. Needless to say, this extends to other current sporting stars worldwide in fields other than football, such as Tiger Woods or Kelly. Indeed you may find more than one biography available on some stars. Some are very well written. Others are not. There are quite a few written and produced for the most legendary sports in hardback. These tend to be the more expensive, larger, more comprehensive variety with more in-depth detail and greater research whereas some of the soft back biographies, whilst less costly, tend to contain less information -- particularly unauthorised versions.

Historical Biographies
Historical biographies are focused on famous past figures and are often written by historians using experts such as archaeologists to uncover truths and research the past on famous people the world over. These include profiles of leaders such as Genghis Khan or Tutankhamen. Other more recent famous political biographies may include Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, John F Kennedy and Mother Theresa. Later tomes are less likely to have been written by historians and rely more on the influence and provision of the media. Other historical biographies focus on royal history, particularly in Europe, and again these are more likely to be carefully documented and researched books written by historians who have referred to numerous sources and studied the person in question. In Britain famous biographies include not only that of Henry VIII but also political figures such as Lord Nelson and infamous persons such as the criminal highwayman, Dick Turpin or the serial killer 'Jack the Ripper'. These types of biography are of interest to both those with an interest in history and politics or perhaps those studying past events and people. Or simply those with more prurient interests. Historical biographies thus cover a number of fields and areas of study including art with biographies on artists such as Van Gogh, musicians such as Beethoven, scientists such as Darwin, mathematicians such as Einstein and authors such as Shakespeare. These biographies can provide fascinating insights into the extraordinary lives of some famous past figures, act as a study guide or uncover truths about the past including conspiracies and theories.

Modern Biographies
Many biographies that are written today are about people who are still alive and are thus also likely to benefit from some input from subject themselves. Some authors such as Roald Dahl and Jeanette Winterson have written their own (semi) autobiographies which have subsequently become well known publications in their own right ('Boy' and 'Oranges are not the only Fruit'). There are biographies of other famous authors, particularly those whose fame has been revitalised with the adaptation of their fiction onto the big screen. Other biographies have been written about famous actors and actresses and musicians. While some are recent historical biographies such as those on Jimi Hendrix or Jim Morrison, they are not written with quite the degree of research exhibited in historical biographies but are more akin to those on famous acting personalities. On which subject, there are a range of biographies from Greta Garbo and James Dean to Julia Roberts or Brad Pitt. These often include many photographs, sourced interviews, quotations and references to the Hollywood culture of the times. Biographies about famous musicians are often similarly written and are usually quite distinct in style. However, those that borrow the most from a media style of writing are the most recent biographies written, co-written or endorsed by celebrities themselves including current media favourites such as Jordan, Pamela Anderson and the Beckham's, all jumping on board to supervise the writing of their individual biographies.

Buying a Biography
Most biographies can be bought cheaply in good condition, second hand. There are often some bargains available particularly if they are to be used for study as new biographies for this purpose are often expensive in shops or online. The hardback variety can be more expensive even when bought second hand but are still nowhere near as expensive as buying the book, brand new. The biographies most recently written about celebrities are less likely to be available second hand but are relatively reasonably priced in comparison to other books on the market.
