Commonly kept birds include:

Budgerigars
Budgerigars are friendly in nature, quickly tamed, and sociable. They are the most popular pet bird. Due to their ease of care and maintenance, they are particularly suitable for older children with the time and patience to care for them properly.

Pigeons & Doves
Pigeons and Doves make tremendous pets for very young children, as they are gentle, quiet, easy to tame and safe. A child can handle the bird without problems, and negligible fear of hurt. They are usually healthy and hardy, and easy to care for. They require little maintenance and are inexpensive.

Canaries
Canaries make great pets for people that enjoy music, as they possess a fantastic song. Although it is commonly believed that all canaries are yellow, they come in several colours. Canaries are not generally suitable for children, as they have some special needs. They are extremely sensitive to household chemicals and require a constant temperature of 25C, with low humidity.

Lovebirds
Lovebirds are friendly birds, making great pets. They are hardy and can tolerate extreme temperatures, especially cold weather. However, they are active birds that love company, so need to be kept in pairs.

Finches
The "Zebra" finch is possibly the most common, though these delicate birds come in various colours and patterns. They are social creatures and should be kept, at least, in pairs. They make friendly, cheeky, companions. For those, such as older individuals, or those who have less time, they can be the ideal, as they tend to make their own amusement.

With their brightly coloured plumage, enchanting song and cheeky personalities, birds can make wonderful pets. However, like any other pet, to keep them happy and healthy, consider their natural behaviour and needs. Here are a few things to consider:

Cost
People buying their first domestic bird often spend all they afford on the bird itself. They are then faced with the expense of an appropriate cage and accessories, feeding and ongoing costs. Be aware of the fact that buying a bird is not a "one-off" expense. However, budget as much as possible for essentials, such as cage and diet, thus avoiding long-term problems.

Accommodation
Any cage should be as large as possible. The bird needs to be able to spread both wings out, up and turn around without touching the sides. For larger birds, height is probably more important than width as they like climbing exercise. For smaller birds, the length of the cage is more important as they get their exercise from flying within the cage, which is generally a sideways movement. Provide a variety of perches of different diameters along with some natural branches. The door latch must be bird-proof and all welding smooth. Check that the bar spacing is appropriate for the size of bird, to avoid potentially fatal accidents, if your bird gets trapped between them. Place the cage should be placed in a warm, draught-free area, but the bird can see what is going on, and benefit from socialisation. Avoid strong, direct sunlight.

Diet
A varied diet is essential. Dry seed may form the basis of the diet. However, it needs to be supplemented with fresh fruit, vegetables, etc. Many birds also require a calcium supplement (in cuttlefish, hung in the cage). A vitamin and mineral additive in the drinking to the water also helps. Ensure the dry seed mix you buy is appropriate for your particular bird. They have been developed with the specific dietary needs of different species in mind and should not be carelessly fed.

Cleaning
Proper cleaning is essential to bird safety. Inaccessible cages lead to an increased risk of contamination and hence serious disease. Replacing bedding at least once a day is vital. Ensure the cage allows easy access, without risk of escape. Additionally, food and water dishes should be able to be easily removed and replaced without having to open the main door. After cleaning, always ensure that you have rinsed the cage thoroughly to remove all traces of disinfectant before returning your pet bird to the cage.

Other Considerations
All birds can be messy, although the extent varies with the species. Even with a large cage, food will often be scattered and spilled around the area. Some birds produce lots of feather dust, which is worth bearing in mind if you or a family member is prone to allergies. Many of the parrot species are also very destructive, delighting in using their beaks to chew and tear things apart, so you will have to supervise any times when your pet is outside its cage. While a bird may not be as demanding as, say, a dog, they still need daily maintenance and social interaction. If you have limited free time, then finches or canaries (kept in pairs) or other independent species would be better than a parrot species, which would need socialisation and company to thrive. Furthermore, the larger parrot species can live to an extended age, necessitating commitment to caring for the bird for its entire life
