BMW cars are synonymous with excellence. BMW models are designed to combine style and performance thorough technological superiority. The company specialises in premium cars for the international market. The BMW group also owns Rolls-Royce and MINI, making it a major player in the quality motor car sector.

History of BMW
Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto founded BMW. Otto was the son of the inventor of the 4 stroke internal combustion engine, Nikolas Otto. He had a passion for aviation, and set up a factory that supplied planes to the Royal Bavarian flying corps during WW1, in 1916 this company was bought out and renamed as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW). At the same time Rapp established a company (Rapp Motorenwerke) that supplied airplane engines to the Austrian army. The Austrian army decided to build Austro-Daimler engines at Rapp Motorwerke under the supervision of Franz Popp, who instigated the hiring of a new designer, Max Friz. Friz's innovative designs were far better than previous engines. Rapp's position was terminated, and the name of the company changed to Bayerische Motorenwerke GmbH (BMW) on 21st July 1917. A financier, Camillo Castiglioni purchased BFW and in 1922 he brought about the merger of BFW with BMW. Popp became managing director of BMW, a position he kept until 1942. The BMW engine received a large number of orders and the company began to grow, with more skilled workers and new machinery.

The first BMW car was produced in 1928, it was the Dixi 3/15 PS, following this a string of models were produced with success, the BMW 328 in particular was a lucrative commercial model and a winning car on the sporting circuit. WW2, however, slowed the company's progress, a production ban was imposed by the allies and the factories lay destroyed. BMW rebuilt itself in the 1950's, the BMW 507 was launched in 1956, this model still remains an influence on the design of BMW's. During the 1970's the 5 series, 3 series and 7 series were introduced. In the 1990's BMW returned to their roots in aircraft engineering by buying out Rolls Royce. The company expanded, buying out Rover in 1994 and selling it again in 2000, however BMW retained the mini brand.

Current BMW models
BMW models are part of the quality car market, and as such all the models are well equipped as standard. It goes without saying that airbags, ABS and electric windows are included on all models along with numerous embellishments such as CD players and computers with information on fuel consumption, temperature and speed.

BMW models fall into different series categories as follows:
  • 1 Series: The 1 series BMW is available in 3 door, 5 door, Coupe, and Convertible. These cars can be relied upon to have excellent handling and are very pleasing to drive. The 118d E81 3-dr is commendable for cutting carbon dioxide emissions whilst increasing performance through a series of efficiency modifications. The 5 door version has also described as a good drive by testers. The coupe model looks good but the steering is thought to be over light. The 1 series cars are fairly small. Although they can fit 4 adults and the standard models have reasonable boot space, these cars are built for the driver rather than for the space.
  • 3 Series: The models available in the series are Saloon, Touring, Coupe and Convertible. The 3 series is highly rated for handling and ease of driving. The convertible is attractive, the latest models having a folding hard top, and has a surprising amount of luggage space.
  • 5 Series: A Saloon and Touring version of the BMW 5-series are available. As with the other BMW's the car is well balanced with good handling and has a loyal following in the sales and middle executive market.
  • 6 Series: The 6-series is available as a Coupe and a Convertible. These cars were made to be driven on the open road, and are thus not an ideal city car. The 6 series has an aggressive look and a number of innovative technologies including a glass rear window which operates independently of the folding roof on the convertible, doubling as a wind break. Reviews are very positive.
  • 7 Series: The 7-series is only sold as a Saloon, which like the 5 series is a good drive. It has a solid position in the executive market, competing with the Audi A8, Mercedes S Class, VW Phaeton and the Jaguar XJ.
  • X3/X5: These cars are 4 wheel drive SUV's, the X3 is slightly smaller then the X5 and, whilst offering a somewhat hard ride, is compact and easy to park, making it ideal for the school run. The X5 is a good family car with plenty of space and a good ride. There is now an option to get the X5 with 7 seats.
  • Z4: The Z4 is available in Roadster Coupe form. Slightly quirky in appearance but unmistakably a BMW, these two seaters appeal to a young entrepreneurial audience.
  • M series: The models in the M series are the M3 Coupe, M3 Saloon, M5 Touring, M5 Saloon, M6 coupe, M6 convertible, Z4 M roadster and the Z4 M coupe. M series cars have uprated engines, suspension and drive train, together with body kits and styling badges. Many owners buy aftermarket kits and add them to standard models be aware of this when purchasing what may be claimed to be an M series car.
Things to consider
When buying any car the vehicle, you should do your research and exercise a good degree of caution. Cars are an emotive subject for many of us at the best of times and it is all too easy to get carried away. This is particularly true of used cars. Used cars can be bought through classifieds, private sales or from a registered dealer. It is important to consider what you want from a car, including the size, number of passengers it needs to carry, where and how much it will be driven. Other costs such as insurance and running costs must also be considered. The car should also be checked for scratches bumps and any rust. As well as visible damage, the mechanical and electronic parts should be checked. If you don't know what you are doing, pay for a professional appraisal. All the car's documents including a full service history should be present. It is always best to have a checklist and someone with you when purchasing the car, to make sure that nothing is overlooked
