Buying Books and Magazines

Books are the most commonly bought item over the internet and is it any wonder when books are possibly more popular now than they ever have been before. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of retailers available online, each one offering more and more competitive prices on the latest best seller, which is good for us customers who merely have to sit back and wait for the prices to drop.

But despite the number of bookstores and supermarkets offering a wide range of titles, sometimes you can just never find what it is you're looking for, and this is where the internet can really come in handy.

The lost books
Perhaps you read a story as a child that you'd like to read to your own children, perhaps you're doing a bit of research, perhaps you wrote a book yourself and wondered why no-one sells it anymore! Whatever the reason, there is still hope, why not try the classifieds?

There are several major websites that specialise in auctions and private sales, but there are few that can narrow down the location of what you're after to the nearest seller. Online classifieds are a great way of browsing for those items that you can never find in the shops. Even with second hand book stores there is a great deal of looking around required, but the classified sites are there to help, and with a few simple pushes of a button, you could soon have that first edition copy, that signed edition or that rare comic of magazine that the word has forgotten, sitting on your own shelf at home.

The genuine article
Buying online can occasionally prove rather tricky. Despite the opportunity for sellers to download pictures of the items they wish to sell, there's still no guarantee that what you're getting is the real deal. Classified adverts allow for communication between buyer and seller, though usually you will have to become a member to get any contact details, this process is free and worth doing just to be sure.

Check with the seller for information in a book that would identify it as a first edition such as the date it was first published, the date it was first printed and whether the date on the title page matches the date on the copyright page. It can be hard to determine whether an autographed book is genuine unless you're a really big fan of the author and have something to compare it to so be wary of anyone claiming to have a signed copy as this scam can prove costly.

For the avid collector
Buying magazines and journals second hand may seem like a strange thing to do, but for anyone who has missed an edition of their favourite magazine, or has a gap in their collection, then the classified ads can be a great place to start. Most retailers tend not to stock old editions and it would be up to the publishers to release any old copies, so sometimes buying second hand can be the only option.

For comic book fans, searching for those special finds can be part of the appeal in collecting, and classified ads can also make great places to meet like-minded people or sell your own stuff. Only true fans will know the value of their items, and private sellers could even swap without charging a fee. The ads are a great place to let the world know you're looking for something in particular if at first it doesn't appear to be found. Perhaps someone has inherited a collection and doesn't quite know what to do with it why not offer to take it off their hands for a small price!

What the bookstores won't stock
Despite the size of some of the more popular commercial retailers, they tend to rely on customer purchases to determine what to stock and whilst many will make that extra effort to locate what you're after, it can be much cheaper to look for it yourself online where there won't be a commission fee charged on top.

Reference books and journals in particular can be tricky to find if they are very specialised, but you can almost guarantee that someone, somewhere will have a copy they are prepared to sell on. It can be difficult if you are in a particular occupation that has specific reading requirements, or for a student perhaps, writing a thesis on a relatively unknown subject journals can be very expensive so second hand may save a fortune in the long run.

It's easy
Signing up couldn't be easier and most classified sites will give options for a thorough search so no stone is left unturned for those on a particular hunt. There are locations searches available so you can so where the nearest seller lives this could save time and money with postage too. Even if you just want to browse and see what other people have to offer, then why not get online and start reading straight away?
