Consider the kind of clothes your boy needs for an average day. If he is in school, he will need a wardrobe that includes clothes that can be worn all day. The essential point is to buy the style of clothing he is comfortable wearing and that you are comfortable buying. You don't want him to look the same every day, but neither do you want to spend vast fortunes on an extensive wardrobe. It is best to purchase trousers and shirts that can be matched with each other. A sensible wardrobe of boys' clothes would include, say, five pairs of trousers and ten shirts. The trousers should be in basic, neutral colours, so that each pair of trousers "goes" with at least four of the shirts. This will provide enough variety for a different combination every day for a fortnight. It also reduces the wear and tear on the clothes from repeated washing. Socks and underwear are also important. Go through your boy's "smalls," discarding anything that is worn or has holes in it. This will give you an idea of what you need to add to your shopping list.

If possible, when shopping for kids' clothes, take a parent of a child of similar age with you. Other parents may be familiar with shops you haven't tried. They may be able to provide specific advice on certain brands, and may also know where to find discounted boys' clothes. Finally, and most importantly, take your son with you when shopping. Most kids absolutely hate shopping for clothes, so this can be an ordeal and trial of patience for you both. However, you can get him to try on clothes, and be certain that he will actually wear the clothes that your are buying. There is nothing worse than returning from a solo shopping trip, to find that half the items don't fit, and those that do are greeted with a pout and the, "Don't like that," response. Furthermore, if you take your child with you, he may remind you of other clothes he needs, that you forgot to put on your list. Alternatively, he may simply see something he likes, of which you approve. The more shopping you can do in one go, the more time you will have to spend doing something more enjoyable.

Shoes
As you are doubtless aware, boys' feet perspire greatly. The upper of the shoe should be made of a "breathable" material, which allows perspiration to evaporate. Appropriate materials include leather, canvas or newer mesh type materials. Absorbent insoles (especially the padded type) are a good idea. Avoid shoes made from synthetic materials. These do not allow moisture to evaporate. Given that they a likely to be worn for up to eight hours a day, there is the possibility of long-term damage to your boy's feet.

For a new pair of school shoes, if you cannot insert your finger at the back, the size is wrong. A good pair of shoes will have a certain amount of "give" built in, so you shouldn't have to buy a bigger size. On a similar subject, children are not meant to "break in" a new pair of shoes. If they do, it is the wrong type of shoe for their feet. Get your child's feet measured at least every three months. Most parents are often surprised when they discover that their (especially younger) child's shoe size has moved on two or more sizes since their last new pair.

Buying for a Teenager
Every teenage boy wants to be cool, and, given the "generation gap," you'll probably need some tips as to what qualifies these days. Ask your teenager what he likes and what he wants to wear. When you are with him and you see teenage boy's clothes, ask him what he thinks of a particular style or fashion.

You will not agree with many of your son's choices in teenage boys' clothes. It is not only important to ask him what he likes, but also to know what you are willing to purchase. You may not like ultra-baggy trousers or t-shirts that are not tucked in. It is your money, after all, so tell him the "ground rules," before the shopping begins. Have a budget in mind and keep to it as closely as possible. Once you begin shopping, your son will undoubtedly try to add some other merchandise. Are you willing to spend more money on skateboards, necklaces and hats? If not, know when to stop.

Ask other parents of teenage boys where they shop for clothes. You will find out about shops you weren't aware of before, as well as how other parents set limits on what kind of clothes they let their teenagers wear.

Finally, take your teenage boy with you when you go shopping. As with younger boys, he won't want to go, but may "perk up" when he has some new gear. He will influence your purchases, and you will be able to influence his style choices. Neither of you may win every point, but, at least, you can reach a compromise between too casual and too formal.
