Breakdown Cover, otherwise known as Breakdown Recovery or Breakdown Insurance, provides assistance in the event of a vehicle breakdown. A breakdown company will repair your vehicle at the roadside if possible. If such repairs are not possible, they will recover your vehicle and take it to a location of your choice.

Who Provides Breakdown Cover?
Many companies now provide Breakdown Cover, including most insurance companies. The service was primarily started by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) and The Automobile Association (AA). Both the RAC and AA started as clubs offering support to their members, but expanded to offer assistance for mechanical failures. With the aid of satellite navigation guided engineers, in state-of-art rescue vehicles, breakdown engineers can find you more rapidly than ever before. Both the RAC and AA have a history of over 100 years of service and carry formidable reputations for the quality of service they provide.

Is it Necessary?
Breakdown Cover is not expensive. There may well be circumstances where you regret not having cover. Many motorists find themselves stranded on the roadside after a breakdown. Winter months are the worst for cars breaking down, due to the effect of bad weather on your car's mechanics. In remote areas and freezing weather, it can be especially dangerous to experience a vehicle breakdown. However, with the aid of a breakdown cover and a 'phone, assistance may not be too far away. All major recovery services have satellite navigation systems, and will try to reach you as quickly as possible.

Main Issues To Consider
With so many different policy options available it is useful to consider what your needs are before taking out cover. Vehicle-based cover means that anyone driving your vehicle is covered. Person-based cover means that you can be the driver or passenger of any vehicle and still receive assistance. The latter is usually more expensive. Personal cover can be especially beneficial if you drive several vehicles. You then need to decide on the level of cover you require, from basic roadside assistance through to more comprehensive packages offering alternative transport, hotel accommodation, etc. Your insurer may also offer you options for additional names on the policy, though these might mean a small additional premium.

What is The Right Policy?
Here are some typical policies on offer:

Standard
  • Repair at roadside
  • Transport vehicle to garage within a specified radius
  • Free roadside repair/labour up to one hour
Intermediate
  • Repair at roadside
  • Transport vehicle to garage within a specified radius
  • Repair at your house given location
  • Return vehicle to local garage
  • Free roadside repair/labour up to one hour
Premium
  • Repair at roadside
  • Transport vehicle to garage within a specified radius
  • Free roadside repair/labour up to one hour
  • Hire car to return home or for onward journey
  • Cost of alternative transport home or for onward journey
  • Repair at your house given location
  • Return vehicle local garage
  • Accommodation costs
What Are Response Times For Recovery?
This is dependent on factors such as the number of calls with which your recovery provider is dealing, and how remote your location. The average response time is around an hour for the major firms in the UK who provide emergency assistance twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year. All companies should be able to provide you with an average response time, when obtaining quotes so ensure you ask about their recovery times and compare with other providers.

What If My Car Breaks Down At Home?
Most firms will arrange and pay for assistance at your home. Check your policy.

Where Can You Buy Breakdown Recovery Insurance?
Given the number of providers nowadays, it is sensible to you shop around and get at least four or five quotes. Apart from the premium, check what is covered under the policy, including any exclusions, restrictions and extras. It may be cheaper to book your policy online in some circumstances.

Will I Be Covered in Another Car?
If you have person-based cover, even if you are travelling in someone else's car (or on their motorcycle) as a driver or a passenger, it is still possible to use your breakdown recovery insurance to obtain assistance. Person-based cover covers you whilst travelling as a driver or passenger with any vehicle. Again, check the terms of your policy carefully.

What is Covered?
Cover varies from policy to policy, but the following are usually covered:

  • Mechanical breakdown
  • Accident damage
  • Vandalism
  • Fire
  • Theft/attempted theft
  • Flat battery
  • Electrical failure
  • Flat tyres
