Nowadays a lot of people are choosing to read business management books and magazines on a self-improvement basis. These range from US 'blockbuster' management books through to specialist niche management markets. It used to be that people could only improve their management skills and experience by learning as they managed or by going on the management training courses that they were offered by the firms for which they worked. Now, they can also buy specifically targeted business management books and magazines to help them.

An introduction to business management books and magazines
There is a seemingly endless array of choices in the business management books and magazines sector. Some people will read them simply because they are interested in the fields in question, some to improve their career prospects either in the short or long term and some as part of specific training, study or courses. So, for example, you could read a book on specific techniques when studying for an MBA or you could read a book on managing a tele-sales operation when you suddenly get promoted and need some urgent help.

Business and management magazines are equally diverse. Some magazines will handle general management issues whilst other will handle specific areas of business management expertise. Some magazines come out regularly (i.e. weekly or monthly) whilst other appear less frequently (i.e. quarterly). Some people will subscribe to or buy every issue of a business management magazine whilst others will only buy them when they cover areas of particular interest. Some buy these kinds of magazines to learn about the business management world as a whole (i.e. from the experience of other companies and individuals) whilst others buy magazines that take a more tuition-based approach.

Things to think about before buying new business management books and magazines
Although most book shops on the high street will have a business section, they may not have the room to cover all sectors within this genre and you may need to go online to find the book or magazine you need or to order it from the book shop itself.

Don't expect to find significant discounts on the high street for most business management books and magazines (magazines are rarely, if ever, sold at discount costs in particular). Although, some stores will sometimes give discounts on popular titles if they hit the best seller lists and competition becomes exceptionally fierce.

If you buy new business management books online, however, especially from online book sites, then most will give a discount as standard on all the books they sell so you may save money by buying new this way. Do check that postage costs don't eat into the savings you could make. If you do see a business management book sold at a discount in a high street book shop then check why -- it may be that a revised or newer edition has been published so you'll need to check how useful the old one will actually be.

Things to think about before buying business management books and magazines second hand
You can save yourself a lot of money by buying business management books and magazines second hand. Again, check that the book or magazine you are buying this way has the up to date information that you need.

You'll also need to check on the quality and condition of the book -- in many cases quality won't be so much of an issue to you as you may simply want to read the book once and then refer to it every now and then. Do however check that it is at least in a readable condition (i.e. has all its pages and isn't falling apart!). If you are buying over the Internet where you cannot actually see the book then ask to see a digital photo of the book and ask the seller about the condition if you need to.

Some people also collect business management books and magazines as either a hobby or as part of a book selling business. If this is the case, then quality and condition could have a bearing on the value of the book now and in the future so you may want to make more stringent checks on condition before buying the book or magazine. This doesn't matter with some rarer or more obscure books where simply having the book is worth money -- even if it is a bit tatty!

Finally, do remember that some business management books can be hefty, heavy tomes so, if you are buying online, check and double check the postage costs!
