There is usually very little difficulty attached to hiring a car in the U.K. In most cases, the hiring company just needs to see some basic driving documents. However, for very young drivers, or those with a suspect driving record, a more in-depth discussion, along with different hire terms, may be applicable.

HIRING A CAR
Obviously, a valid U.K. driver's licence is always required. Most car rental companies will insist that you have held a full licence for a reasonable period, usually in excess of a year. There are a number of other considerations to take into account when contemplating hiring a car:

1. Check for Age Restrictions.
Statistically, younger drivers are far more likely to be involved in accidents than older drivers. Consequently, most car rental companies have age restrictions some way above the minimum legal driving age. Age restrictions also vary according to the type of vehicle required. For "high-spec" or four-wheel drive vehicles, the restrictions are generally more stringent. Even companies willing to rent to younger drivers may insist on a surcharge for larger and /or more powerful vehicles.

Check If Your Driving Record Complies with Company Policy
If you have something of a "chequered" driving career, ensure that the details of your driving record will not prevent you from hiring you preferred car. If you have points on your licence, some companies may completely refuse to consider you.

Insurance
Most car rental firms in the UK will include basic third-party cover as standard. If you want something more, you probably will have to pay extra. However, extra cover is recommended. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Vehicle Use
Consider whether you plan to do anything unusual with the car you rent. For example, towing another vehicle or caravan or off-road driving. Such activities will typically not be covered by a basic car rental agreement. They will constitute policy violations for which you will be charged.

Book in Advance
Book as far in advance as possible. If you know exactly when you're going to need the car, book in advance and you may get a discount.

Other Drivers
Check the company policy regarding additional drivers if you plan to let someone else drive the vehicle. In most cases, an additional driver will have to present the same documents as the main and a surcharge will be levied.

Deposit
Many rental companies require a cash deposit when renting a vehicle. Some may accept a valid credit card instead. A satisfactory credit check may also be required. Additionally, some rental companies may require that you verify your home address. This is usually by producing two domestic utility bills, less than three months old.

Inclusions
Most rental agreements include unlimited mileage (except with some types of vehicles in certain UK locations), collision damage waiver (unless caused by misuse), third party insurance cover, unless requested otherwise, theft protection insurance and UK government taxes. In some cases, an excess charge is payable in the case of vehicles returned with damage.

Exclusions
The following areexcluded from most rental agreements:

Fuel.
Personal Accident Insurance.
Special Request Items (roof rack, baby seat, etc.)
Young and /or additional driver surcharges.

It should be noted that, with most car rental companies, insurance cover offered does not cover tyres, punctures, windscreens, roof damage (if roof rack is fitted), wing mirrors and coded keys (whether lost or locked in vehicle).

Delivery / Collection
This is normally free for UK car hire bookings at airports during normal daylight / working hours (this varies locally and can be advised at the time of booking). If an out-of-hours service can be provided, there will be a local fee.

Special Requests
Baby / child seats, roof racks, ski racks and snow chains may be available in most destinations provided they are specially requested at the time of booking, although these items cannot be guaranteed at any time. In most cases, a small charge will be made. The cost of these items is generally subject to change without prior notification.

Traffic Offences
When hiring a car in the UK clients are responsible for any parking fines, tow away charges or impounding fees incurred by them. Please note that this rule also applies to airport waiting areas and cars must be redelivered to points as instructed at time of collection.
The terms and conditions of hiring vehicles are governed by local laws and the rental contract signed locally on collection of the car is legally binding on the hirer. The hiring company is not responsible to the hirer for loss, damage, delay, injury, cancellation, alterations, irregularity or additional expenses suffered by the hirer whatsoever
