Increased power cannot be generated by just adding more fuel. The engine needs to "breath" more efficiently, providing enough oxygen to burn the additional fuel. Pistons draw in air (oxygen being the important bit) and push out exhaust gases through the cylinder head, and valves above the pistons. This can be done by "conventional" means, namely internal engine work, tuning the internals to give better airflow. No "bolt on" power modifications such as turbocharging, supercharging, nitrous oxide injection, etc. are involved. However, there are a number of techniques available to make the production of extra (allegedly) power easier.

Chip tuning
Chip Tuning or "Chipping" is something of a con! Firstly, a noticeable increase in power is simply not possible with a naturally aspirated car (no turbo) by fitting a "chip" or having it "chipped". If you do not increase oxygen flow to the engine, it cannot generate more power. The chip simply tells the fuel system how much fuel to add. The manufacturer's settings are usually optimum for peak power. It also controls the ignition timing, but again the manufacturer's settings will be about perfect. It is only possible to get tiny gains in "drivability" rather than more real power. It is possible to gain a few percent here and there at different rpm's and throttle plate positions, since manufacturers tailor the fuel map to give optimum economy, smoothness and low emissions. These gains are pretty small. They may result in better drivability, but definitely not noticeable extra power.

Super /Turbocharging
Turbochargers work by feeding more air into your engine. A standard car engine may be for example like the Ford CVH 1.6 engine in the "Escort". The well-known XR3 which generated 105bhp, and an almost identical turbocharged "RS Turbo" used the same engine. This version generated 135bhp. Supercharging your car makes more power by forcing more air into your engine. This allows more fuel to burn.

Fuel Additives
There are many different fuel additives with a hundred and one different claims. Many additives claim to improve power, torque, "smoothness", emissions and mileage, sometime by up to 25%. The simple truth is that they cannot and are a con!

CAR STYLING

Exterior

Wide Body kits
The bulges and bumps on the sides of high performance cars are not merely cosmetic. A wider wheelbase, along with wider wheels provide superior grip. However, it is a pointless exercise fitting a wider body to a car if there is going to be an almighty gap between the wheels and outside of the wheel arches. There are, however, solutions:
  • Bolt spacers to the hub, thus pushing the wheel out a bit further.
  • Fit wider wheels. However, be aware of the effect on the gear ratio and speedometer accuracy.
Wide body kits come in sections, for "seamless" attachment to your vehicle. This usually involves rivets or studs, finished with a smoothing compound. It is worth getting your car sprayed professionally, for a quality finish. One important point: Make sure the current mirrors give sufficient visibility, or fit wider ones. Having taken so much time, effort and expense, scraping a wall or post will be heartbreaking.

Alloy Wheels
Alloy wheels are probably the most common styling modifications performed. Generally, the larger the wheel and more low profile the tyre, the more stylish the look. Different models have varying numbers of nuts on the hub, with different spacing. Additionally, the internal space for brake disks also needs to be considered. Fitting low dust brake pads will reduce pitting on the new alloys. Many alloy wheels allow the brake disk and callipers to show, so a tin of calliper paint might be in order. Alloys that have been scraped against kerbs look particularly unsightly, so it is worth investing in wider walled tyres to reduce this risk.

Headlight Conversions
Popular trends of headlight conversion include Lexus style lights with clear lenses, coloured bulbs and "angel eyes," as popularised by BMW. Such clear or crystal lenses look good, but the effect can be spoiled by the coloured bulb. Fortunately, silver finished bulbs are available which do not show through the lens.
There are numerous headlight kits on the market. Most are easily fitted, though some require the removal of the front bumper. Ensure that with any headlight kit:
  • It is legal
  • Approved for road use, especially with regard to coloured or tinted bulbs
  • The headlights are properly, by a specialist.
Interior
There are many sports seats on offer, but the difficulty lies in finding matching rear seats. It is sometime possible to find them at scrapyards. However, such seats will probably need reupholstering and recovering.
This is expensive, as both jobs need expert attention. When having seats recovered, be careful with your choice of material. Leather repels liquid stains, and can be easily stretched to fit, creating a classy finish. Other suitable fabrics include cotton and man-made fabrics. Make sure you get a good finish and that seams are double stitched to avoid fraying. If you are seeking a complete interior "refit," this needs to include door panels. Door furniture and handles can bee tricky, dependent on their mode of attachment. It might be a good time to upgrade your speakers too. Finishing touches, such as dials, gear knob and handbrake can be found to match the design scheme. Additionally, suppliers are lately producing stick-on trim surround in wood leather and carbon fibre, allowing a wide choice of colour and finish.
