Carpets are expensive and can really influence the appearance or a room or a workplace so it is important to keep them clean and well maintained. There is nothing more likely to create a bad impression of your home or office than a shabby carpet. So, it can be a good idea to consider hiring a professional carpet cleaning service to maintain your carpets to the highest standard, but how can you be sure you choose a reputable, reliable and professional cleaning service?

How to find a carpet cleaning service
Many carpet cleaning services in your area will advertise themselves on one or more of the classified ads sites and will include their contact details. It is also a good idea to ask friends and family if they could recommend a carpet cleaning service. Finally, a list of carpet cleaners is also available on the National Carpet Cleaning Association (NCCA) website.

Find out what services and cleaning methods are provided
The most common methods of cleaning carpets include traditional wet and steam cleaning systems as well as more modern dry cleaning systems. One of the most effective carpet cleaning methods is a truck mounted hot water extraction system. This will really clean your carpet and ensure the total eradication of dust mites. Some companies may offer portable machines that use the same method of cleaning but these systems are not generally as powerful as the truck mounted systems and may not produce quite as good a result. Some profession carpet cleaning companies may also be able to offer a hand washing service for Persian or oriental rugs and carpets which should include the collection and return of the carpets to your home or workplace. Carpet cleaning firms can also provide expert stain or odour removal services for particular stubborn stains such as ink, grease or oil which you would not be able to remove yourself. You should also check that any chemicals and shampoos used are self-neutralising and biodegradable so that you won't be left with any lingering unpleasant smells.

Qualifications and experience
If you want to receive a professional standard of service you will need to make sure that you choose a professional carpet cleaning service. One way to in which do this is to ask if they are members of the National Carpet Cleaning Association as this will give you some assurance as to the standard of service. If the cleaning company uses the truck mounted method then check that they actually know how to use the equipment properly: improperly used, this equipment can seriously damage the carpet, for example heating it to an extent whereby the glue used in many modern carpet backings dissolves and is drawn through the fibres of the carpet, thereby discolouring it permanently. A good way to check this is to ask if they are a member of the Truckmounters Carpet Cleaners Association (TMCCA).

Arrange a visit
Ask the carpet cleaning company to visit your house or workplace to have a look at the carpet to be cleaned. They should be able to tell you whether or not they can remove certain stains or fix any damaged areas. You should also establish if they will move your furniture but it is generally advisable for you to remove any small or personal items from the room. Also ask if the carpet needs to be left for any particular length of time to dry before you can walk on it again.

Prices
Ask several different carpet cleaning services to give you a free quotation for your job. Make sure that the quote contains a detailed breakdown as to what services will be provided. Don't be tempted to select a carpet cleaner on the basis of the cheapest quote as this could work out to be a false economy if they provide a poor quality job, or worse still, ruin your carpet and don't offer a money back guarantee. So, while price is an important consideration it is also worth paying a bit more to have peace of mind and be assured of a good service and a good result.

Insurance
Make sure that the carpet cleaner you choose carries public liability insurance (PLI) and any other relevant insurance to cover damage to your carpet and / or other possessions. Ask to see certificates and check that they will not have expired prior to the work commencing. This should not be a problem for any reputable firm.

References
Finally, ask if you could see some references from recent clients with views on the standard of the cleaning service provided and stay well away from any companies who refuse to provide such references.

Carpets can really make or break a room. Over time they collect dust which can never totally be removed by a vacuum cleaner alone and the carpets gradually become duller. Regular professional cleaning can radically transform your carpets and give them and your home or office a new lease of life.
