Always purchase your cat or kitten either from a genuine private individual or from a reputable breeder or pet store who can demonstrate a responsible attitude to animal rearing and sales. Better yet, why not consider an animal shelter or rescue group, so that an abandoned cat will have a loving home.

Whilst most UK animal breeders are ethical and professional, some unscrupulous breeders have been known to produce animals indiscriminately, with no regard for their care or any physical or mental problems that may be perpetuated by such breeding. Their only concern is to make money. They breed both male and female cats until they cannot breed any longer, then kill or dump them. No one should support such tactics.

Buying from Pet Shops
Naturally, pet shops rely on customers pity for the kittens and the pester power of children in making sales. Again, most pet shops are well run ethical businesses who will deal only with professional breeders and, in some cases, animal shelters. Make sure that, in the case of a kitten, that the animal has been properly socialised by placement with others of a similar age. Also perform the visible health checks outlined below.

Buying from Professional Cat Breeders
Reputable, professional cat breeders care for their animals, provide proper medical attention, and choose owners with great care. Their primary concern is for the welfare of the cats, not simply for profit. It is easy to check whether a breeder is of the right calibre: if they are, they will ask you a few quite penetrating questions about your planned environment and care for the animal. Some will even refuse to sell kittens immediately prior to Christmas.

Animal Shelters and Rescue Groups
Animal shelters and rescue groups rescue cats and kittens that are abandoned or homeless and care for them until they can be adopted into loving homes. The cost of these animals is usually minimal and, if you purchase your pet from one, you will be contributing to the solution rather than to the problem of pet abandonment.

Cursory Health Check
Naturally only a vet can perform a detailed health check. Nevertheless, there are a few basic indicators of a cat or kittens overall health:-

The eyes should be dry rather than watering, with no sign of discharge. You can simply test eyesight by gently covering one eye and moving your finger towards the other the cat or kitten will blink.

The nose should be slightly damp to the tough and feel a little velvety. Discharge should not be present and the animal should be breathing quietly and evenly.

The ears should be clean without excessive dark coloured wax (which may indicate ear mites). Watch out for excessive scratching of the ears.

The coat should be soft and even, without patches. Scratching may indicate fleas which will require treatment. Bare patches may indicate a variety of conditions including malnutrition.

The mouth should be pale pink in colour, with white teeth and no odour.

The body and bottom should not appear swollen or distended and the bottom should be clean with no sign of discharge or diahorrea which can be serious, particularly in kittens

The demeanour should be playful and alert. Almost all kittens and cats have a playful side, well into old age. Try dangling a piece of string in front of the animal and seeing whether it chases is across the floor. It may be too nervous of you but most cats find this hard to resist!

Preparing for Ownership
Before you buy or adopt a cat, be sure you know how to care for it properly. You need to know how to feed and water it, what kind of environment to provide, how to socialise it, how much attention it will require, and what kind of veterinary care will be needed over the years. Once you have this information, you can decide if you are ready and able to take on the care of a cat or kitten whose lifespan may in some cases exceed 20 years.

Conclusion
If you are considering buying a kitten or cat, research carefully the requirements of ownership. Try to buy your kitten or cat from a reputable breeder, or, better, from an animal rescue organisation or animal shelter.
