Here is some advice on what to consider when buying a clock or timepiece:

Buying a watch
The main things to consider when buying a watch are style, brand, functions and technology, although price is of course important.

Style: Broadly speaking, watches come in three styles, namely dress, fashion and sports styles. Dress watches are usually worn when you are dressed to go out or for work so these watches are usually elegant with a clean look and have precision timekeeping. The straps are commonly made of good black or brown leather or can also be a metal bracelet-style, often integrated with the body of the watch itself. Fashion watches are really an accessory and form an important part of your outfit and your look. There are many different, well- known and much desired watch designers so, if it is important to you to be seen wearing a designer watch, you should compare different brands, decide on one brand in particular that you like and then choose a model to suit your requirements. Designer watches are expensive although it is possible to find cheaper copies which can be difficult to tell apart from the real thing. The legality of these pieces is another issue entirely! So, make sure that you buy a designer watch from a reputable supplier and be very wary if you are offered a designer watch at a seemingly ridiculously low price.

Functions and technology: Watch technology has advanced greatly and it is common to find watches with many functions in addition to basic timekeeping. A calendar / date function is very common as well as alarms, a compass, altimeter, GPS or a computer. Watches can be analogue or digital and they can operate by being wound up or by battery or even by solar or kinetic (movement) power. So, it is important to decide which technologies and functions are important for you before you buy a watch.

Price: You can really pay anything you want for a watch, from a few pence up to tens of thousands of pounds. Generally, the more you pay the better quality the manufacture, parts and technology will be and the longer it will last. However, if for example, you are buying a fashion watch, you may only want to spend a few pounds and accept that it will not last long but it will at least match your outfit!

Buying a clock
There are a huge number of different styles of clocks to choose from including alarm clocks, mantle clocks, grandfather and grandmother clocks, chiming clocks, lantern clocks, carriage clocks, painted dial clocks and even cuckoo clocks. Which type you choose is really based on personal preference and how you think the clock will fit into its surroundings. For example, a grandfather clock is big and so will require a large space otherwise it will overpower its surroundings. If you are buying a mantle clock try to buy one that is in keeping with your mantelpiece and overall decor. If you are buying a new clock try to buy from a reputable watch or clock maker, seek their advice on the best type of clock for you and ask about a warranty or guarantee.

Buying an antique clock:
Clocks have been made for hundreds of years and an antique clock can be a beautiful and valuable item to have in your home. But, how do you go about buying an antique clock and what should you look out for?
  • It really is best to buy from a specialised dealer so that you can be assured that what you are buying is genuine and you can also benefit from the experience that they have built up in this specialised area over many years. For example, over the years a clock may have had it mechanism update or its case may have been changed to reflect changing fashions. A specialist will be able to explain to you the history of a particular clock.
  • If you don't buy from a specialist dealer then try to read up about clocks and clock makers either on the web or by buying one of the many excellent books that are available on the subject. This will arm you with some knowledge in the area so that you won't appear totally nave and end up being sold a modern fake for a vast amount of money.
  • Antique clocks cannot really be expected to have the same level of timekeeping as a more modern clock but it should be possible, after proper restoration, for an antique clock to function well. If you do decide to get a clock restored then look for a reputable clock restorer with considerable experience in restoration of the type of piece that you have bought.
  • For larger clocks, in particular, it is a good idea to ask for the clock to be delivered and installed in your house and any reputable dealer will include these services as standard.
