One of the most important essentials for any dancer is the leotard. Leotards are worn for practice and performance and can vary in quality, style, size and colour. Looking for the perfect leotard can often be a drawn out process, but there are a few ways to narrow down your search. When shopping, consider the following to help you find one that will best meet your needs:

Practice or Performance?
As a dancer, you will need a leotard for several different reasons during your career. When choosing a leotard, it's important to find one that will lend its self to your particular style of dance. For example, a leotard for classical ballet may differ from one for modern dance. You may also find that different leotards will work well for practice while others may be better for performance. If you are searching for a practice leotard, you will want something that is simple yet durable. However, when purchasing a leotard for performance you may want to focus on style and appearance.

Restrictions
Many dance schools have their own set of requirements governing your leotard choice. To help narrow down your search and make sure you are well prepared, check with your instructor to find out which leotards are preferred or mandatory. Be sure to find out if there are any specific requirements regarding the colour, cut or style. Many teachers feel it's essential to have matching leotards to help create unity among dancers.

Body Type
When purchasing a leotard it is important to find one that works well with your build and body type. Therefore, it's important to choose one that has the features you need. Read all descriptions thoroughly and consider what features are most important to you. Depending on your body type, you may be looking for leotards that offer extra support in the chest area, extra lining or extra length in the torso area.

Style
There are a wide range of styles. Depending on your preference or class requirements, you will be able to choose from camisole, halter, long sleeve, short sleeve and tank style leotards. TIGHTS
Dance tights are of different types including high gloss tights, shimmery tights, opaque firm fit tights, supplex tights and convertible tights. They are available in a wide range of blends as well as colours and sizes suited for all ages. Dance tights are made of different materials including nylon, Lycra, and cotton, but the ones made with a blend of cotton and Lycra are the most durable, opaque and thick. These tights are stretchable and comfortable for the dancers to wear. Cotton-lycra dance tights have flat finishes and absorb perspiration. Dance tights of different material have individual specialty such as nylon-lycra, which offers moderately shiny and stretchable tights, while stretch vinyl dance tights are extremely shiny, heavy and tight fitting. Tights made of micromesh are most often used for stage costumes. The dance tights made of luxury velvet are beautiful and soft to touch. Dance apparel shops offer dance tights for children, girls, boys, teens, ladies and men.

DANCE SHOES
Before learning any dance form, quality and affordable dance shoes are a must. One of the first things to look for is non-slip soles with a metal or wooden type shank on the arch of the foot for added support. Shoes must be fairly lightweight and flexible but yet able to hold up in dance classes. Discounted dance shoes or even used shoes can still be a good idea, especially for someone who is just starting a form of dance. Before purchasing expensive dance shoes, decide on whether they are for competition, casual dancing or a beginners' class. A discounted dance shoe does not always mean that the quality is bad.

ACCESSORIES
Dancewear accessories include dance bags, dance footwear, dance jewellery, dance legwarmers and other accessories. Most dancewear shops offer accessories for ballet, tap, jazz, flamenco and belly dancing. Accessories are available for men, women and children. Any dance accessory will make the perfect gift for a family member or friend who dances, and you can find them in local dancewear shops or on the Internet. Dancewear accessories are an inevitable necessity for new dancers and veterans alike, as there is a lot more than just the dancewear to think about. Obviously, when looking for dancewear accessories, keep your needs in mind. If you have nothing to carry your dancewear in, get a bag. If you need a special cleaning agent, stock up on that.

CLUBWEAR
Corset style tops seem to be everywhere from high profile events to local club nights. There are all shapes and sizes, some looking extravagant and some cheap and tacky. The recent trend for 'Victoriana' seems to have brought with it a newfound love of the corset. High street shops have exploited this by selling corset style tops, which are actually plastic boned bustiers with flimsy hook and eye closures and shouldn't be described as corsets. They do not reshape the silhouette and offer only light support for fashion purposes. This is fine if that's what you want, but don't be duped into paying big money for these fashion items on the belief that they will change your figure. They won't
