Have you ever been through an experience in buying clothes in which you chose a wonderful looking shirt or pair of trousers, tried them on to make sure they fit, but when you got them home, the clothes just didn�t look right or fit correctly? Perhaps they rode up or the shirt gapped across the chest, or the seams were rough and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, we all have had experiences like that! Even the best shoppers experience problems like these. How should one choose clothes that fit correctly and look great?

Slaves to Fashion
Many of us have bad experiences buying clothes because we are slaves to fashion. We think that whatever the current fashions are, we should (must!) wear them, whether they fit correctly or not, whether they flatter us or not. Some of us do this due to peer pressure or the desire to please a loved one. You�ll look better and save money if you dress to make your body look good and feel comfortable.

Choosing Clothes That Fit
It�s very important that you know your own body, including what looks and feels good on you. It�s fine to ask others for opinions or try the latest fashions, but you must decide what is best on you. Take some time to determine which colours look good on you. Which styles flatter your body � whether you are short or tall, of larger build, thin, or average? Don�t buy clothes just because they fit: choose clothes that fit and also look good on you. The size is not the most important criteria when purchasing clothes � the look and feel are!

We all keep clothes that are years out of fashion or that no longer fit. Purchase fashions that are compatible with your shape. Women of larger frame should avoid crop tops, bikinis, or short shorts. But, they can wear appropriate summer tops, flattering bathing suits, and walking shorts. Shorter ladies should not wear 3/4 length shorts but they can wear trousers that fit well and create a long line from waist to shoe. Men with larger stomachs are best advised to avoid Speedos! But, they can happily wear boxer-type swim suits.

If you are not sure what fashions are right for you, consult a �dresser� at a high end department store. Perhaps you have a friend who knows how to dress and can help you. Go shopping with that friend and insist that he or she tell you the truth about your fashion style. Ask him or her to be honest with you about how the clothes look on you and whether or not they fit correctly. These tips apply to second-hand clothing as well as new purchases.

More Tips on Buying Clothes
  • Make sure the clothes you purchase are made of materials that �breathe,� such as cotton or blends and are warm or cool enough for the season in which you will wear them.
  • Clothes should not shrink or expand, fade, or �bleed� when washed or sent to the cleaners.
  • Fabrics should be comfortable and seams should not rub against the skin.
  • Armholes, sleeves, trouser legs, and cuffs should not be so small or so big that they gap open or cling tightly to the body.
  • Underwear should fit properly and not bind.
  • When buying shoes, have your feet measured and purchase shoes that fit well and have toe room. Ladies should avoid high heels except for special occasions as prolonged wearing can cause injury to the calf and leg muscles
  • As you get older, try to drift towards dressing to look elegant, classic, or sporty and avoid desperate attempts in trying to look like a teenager. Teenage fashions are designed for the bodies of teenagers!
Being a slave to fashion can cause you to look uncomfortable or just plain awful! Consider current fashions carefully to make sure they fit correctly, look good on you, and feel good when you wear them. Choose colours that make you look healthy and bring out the colours of your skin, hair, and eyes. If current fashions do not flatter you, then stick to the classics. For ladies these include tailored shirts and blouses, suits, trouser suits, low or medium heeled shoes and simple dresses worn to the knee or just below. Men can rarely go wrong with jeans, carefully fitted trousers, good quality shirts and sweaters, vests, polo shirts, and so forth.
