There are many ordinary products available for shoe and clothes cleaning such as laundry detergents, protective spray for suede and shoe polish. These items are available from supermarkets, pharmacists and shoe shops. However, specialist services and products are also available for expensive items or those which need specialist cleaning such as dry cleaning or hand washing. There are even gift sets for shoe cleaning including a set of brushes and polish which are often traditional in design and usually cost around �50 for a nice set. These are normally marketed for men whereas many clothes cleaning products are often aimed at women. Specialist services also include traditional methods of treating clothes such as pressing and ironing.

Shoe Cleaning Services
Shoe shining is a traditional service that originated in Victorian times but there are a few specialist companies which offer this same service today, mainly located in London as they are something of a tourist attraction. Some services have specific street locations following in the grand tradition of the shoe shine business. This is where the original shoe shiners would set up on the street with steps or a stool for customers to be seated along with the tools for the job which included brushes and polish. Customers would stop and sit on the stool or place a foot on the steps and pay to have their shoes polished there and then. The shoeshine business today as changed very little in terms of the service it offers. There are stands on the street but the business now offers corporate deals where staff will come to a block of offices and shine the shoes of the office staff. These companies will also attend events and trade fairs as a side or tourist attraction. However this is a rare service, mostly suited to men who wear quality leather shoes. If you have an event to promote or would like to organise a day at the office, where all the shoes are shined, then this is the service for you. For individuals it is a novel idea to get your shoes shined on the street although some traditional shoe repair shops or stands may also offer this as an additional service.

Clothes Cleaning Products
Specialist products are usually traditional in nature when it comes to clothes cleaning. Non-specialist products can be bought from catalogues and supermarkets and include clothes horses, irons, ironing board and outdoors clothes dryers. There are also the usual machines such as tumble dryers. However, a specialist firm will offer a particular product that is usually high in quality, made according to a tradition and an alternative to the catalogue products. A pulley maid for example is a traditional item used for drying clothes indoors. It is a space saving device as it is suspended from the ceiling and clothes are hung over it to dry. It is almost always made of wood, sash cord and cast iron. It is often a self-assembly project but it is something that will last a really long time and look authentic and attractive in comparison with a modern clothes indoor dryer. They usually come in different sizes and with instructions to install them in the home. Other types of traditional cleaning product include laundry presses and antique items which are usually collectibles rather than for a practical use.

Clothes Cleaning Services
Clothes cleaning services usually present themselves in the form of dry cleaners. Dry cleaning is available in most areas but not all dry cleaners offer specialist services. Most offer cleaning for clothes designed for dry clean only such as suits and duvets and also minor repairs.

Specialist clothes cleaners offer a range of services such as hand finished shirt laundry which is ideal for business shirts. These will often be starched and pressed in the traditional method to ensure the shirt does not crease and that it has a stiff collar. There might also be a starching service for table linen which is ideal for those holding dinner parties. Furniture covers and curtains might also be cleaned by specialist services as they can offer stain guarding and Flame Retardant treatments as well as mainstream cleaning.

Some services also offer specialist treatment for duvets, eiderdowns and pillows which can be individually treated to ensure dust mites and allergens are removed. Products such as Soft Water and Industrial Detergent are used to process these items and ensure they are returned to a nearly new state.

There are also certain items of clothes that require special and delicate cleaning. Wedding dresses can be treated, restored, repaired and boxed. Wedding dresses swiftly deteriorate if simply left, therefore they need to be stored correctly in acid-reduced boxes which some dry cleaners will provide after cleaning the dress. Suede and leather clothes also need to be specially cleaned to preserve their condition.

Choosing Shoe and Clothes Cleaning
While there are many products and services available for cleaning it is important to choose the right one. Shoe and clothes cleaning products make nice gifts for people but also have a practical use. The traditional kind are, however, much more expensive than modern types of cleaner and polish although they are also more attractively presented. Such products can be bought second hand (but used shoe polish and brushes are unlikely to be particularly useful). You could potentially pick up a bargain if you buy a genuine antique traditional clothes cleaner such as hand operated laundry press or pulley-maid. If you buy these from specialist stores, both the antiques and new items made in the tradition fashion are relatively expensive. However if you buy from an individual these might cost a lot less but you may be taking a risk as to the condition in which you buy the item -- so it is best to view before buying especially as larger items are not really suitable for posting and you will thus probably be looking in your local area to purchase. However rather than attempt to clean certain items such as duvets, curtains and tablecloths with traditional clothes care items that you have bought, it may be better to seek advice from specialist services. They are usually insured and can take care of items more easily and treat them with the correct chemicals and so forth.
