Specialist pens can be bought from specialist retailers as most mainstream stores do not stock them. They can also be found online, although they usually only stock one particular category of pen, as specialist pen stores are often sought by buyers for artwork or ink refills for rare or expensive pens. Vintage pens are usually bought for a different purpose. They are collector's items for those who admire a particular brand of pen that flourished in the twentieth century. Antique pens, on the other hand, are rarely for use, and websites and shops that sell them will also usually sell antique items in connection with pens such as desks and inkwells. These items are usually from the nineteenth century but can date back much further.

Buying Specialist or Rare Pens
Some stores sell pens that are a specialist item either because they are rare and a limited edition, and/or because they are produced by high quality manufacturers. These companies are experts in specialist pens and supplies who can advise which type of pen you should buy, and specific types of ink refills for particular pens. Most of the pens are mainly either ball-point or fountain pens and the range of other stock includes jotters, blotters, calligraphy books and crayon pencils.

Most of the pens are made by recognisable makers of fine pens, worldwide. For example names such as Faber-Castell, Ducati, Exaclair, Acme and Dunhill will appear in these types of stores. There will also be less well known names such as Curtis (an Australian company), combined with designer companies such as Burberry and Christian Dior who produce pens as an additional product line. They also stock some very unusual ink such as Herbin which was used from 1700 and can be used in antique pens.

Specialist pens can be very expensive with even the pencils beginning at 25. Many of them make good gifts particularly for a formal occasion such as a wedding or a leaving present for someone who has given years of service. These are costly, particularly if they are limited edition or made with solid silver. They can range from around 55 and continue up to a few hundred pounds for makes such as Ducati or Delta Israel. Rare pens such as the Delta Israel special birthday edition even retails at around 1,600.

Some sites like this will also offer engraving. There are three types of engraving including the most expensive personal engraving in gold or silver, corporate engraving for an office, and premium engraving where a message, logo or name is printed usually used to promote a business or charity.

Vintage Pens
Vintage pens can be used in a functional way but are mainly collectors' items. Usually collectors buy by a brand and collect pens belonging to that particular brand. Some popular brands include the Parker pens. Usually these are advertised stating the various features and condition. For example, a 'Parker Vacumatic' made during the 1930s might be advertised as featuring a single or double jewel maxes, the use of metal filing and the colour it is presented in. The rarer the features or more unusual colour the more the pen is worth. The 1930s pens are, in general terms, priced at around 300 and are usually only available from specialist stores.

Other pens made by different companies have slightly less value such as Sheaffer pens which are only worth around 50 to 150. Yet the Duofold, Lucky Curve, Challenger and Parkette Parker pens are worth more. The Duofold for example is worth at least 200 if it is in good condition. Waterman pens are even more expensive as those made between 1930 and 1940 can fetch up to 500. Unusual vintage pens are also worth a lot of money. For example a physician's writing set with pen, pencil and thermometer can be worth up to 1000. You can sell your pens to the companies that sell vintage items, or also buy a second hand bargain from an individual seller who will probably sell below the financial value of some of the vintage pens.

Antique Pens
Antique pens and writing implements are also usually sold by specialists at selected stores or online. However some of the pens are actually worth less than the vintage pens, usually because the condition has deteriorated over the years; a standard dip pen is only worth around 35 even if it is over 100 years old. However when sold with the original case, value usually doubles. Victorian items are usually worth more as even the pencils are worth around 50 and if made with gold, the value again doubles.

Other standard writing implements include letter openers, paperweights and seals. These items are fairly common, particularly letter openers, therefore their value is much lower than some of the other items. Letter openers are usually only worth around 25 with the other items little more than this.

More expensive items include writing desks, unusual inkwells and weighing scales. Writing desks and writing slopes are the most expensive, ranging from 500 for a Victorian writing slope, to 2000 for a pre-nineteenth century writing desk in good condition. An unusual inkwell might retail at around 150 and other items such as Post Office scales could fetch around 60.
