Buying Scientific memorabilia is more popular today than most people imagine. There are specialist stores and websites dedicated to this type of memorabilia. There is a wide range of scientific collectibles to buy yet most of the available collectible items were created during the twentieth century. The two World Wars precipitated an interest in collecting memorabilia and some of the scientific items fall into this category. Yet the full range extends to include older and newer items which are covered by a few different categories. Most memorabilia is now designed for serious collectors and antiquarian memorabilia is also sold to serious collectors as even functional items are not sold for this purpose, particularly as to a great extent most of these items can be bought brand new and far more cheaply.

Classic Collectibles
The most common types of scientific collectibles are telescopes, calculators and square rulers, barometers, compasses, sextants and anemometers. The antique versions of these are usually worth far more than the brand new items. Prices begin at less than 10 for the old square set metal rulers used years ago. Sometimes T-squares and other items belonging to technical drawing kits or similar are also listed amongst metal rulers. The next price bracket is from around 20-60 which is what you would expect to pay for a calculator. The price increases depending on the age and design of the calculator. These are the old earliest types of calculators that are large, cumbersome and look a little bit like shop registers. The more unusual and rare they are, the more they are worth -- and some are valued up to the 100 mark. Compasses are also very popular, particularly those used in the First World War. These look like pocket watches and are made in a similar style which is how they can be recognised as antique. They are also made of metal rather than a light alloy which is used today. These items can cost around 200. Sextants are also similarly valued. The most expensive ones have been produced at the turn of the century and are usually made of solid brass. Anemometers are also becoming increasingly popular and reaching this price bracket. Anemometer prices vary as even more recent models are of interest because the item itself is quite rare and difficult to get hold of -- unlike compasses and square rulers they have never been a household item. However, until the World Wars there has been no call for such items but now there quite a lot of interest in this item designed for use in the Air Force. However, larger items are more expensive still. Barometers and telescopes are frequently priced at around 300 and are often heavy objects in three segments that come complete with original leather casing.

When purchasing these types of item it is important to check that they have been preserved in good condition. You can view online photographs on websites and view objects yourselves. You should look at the background and history of the item and what it is contained in. Original casing for the majority of the more expensive objects includes leather casing (usually for telescopes and binoculars which form a sub-category for this type of item), cases with velvet backing, boxes with the object imprint inside and soft leather containers. Another important aspect to check is what the item has been made of as solid metal will increase the value of the memorabilia -- although most antique items will be made of this. The general condition of the item will also affect the sale, as will any accompanying artefacts such as the original sales transaction or instructions and also if the brand name is strong. Makers such as Negretti & Zambra have produced items of a high quality which fetch a greater market value.

Medical Collectibles
There are a number of unusual artefacts relating to medicine that have become collector's items. These are usually around 50 in value such as old medical instruments that are no longer in use in medical practice. Iconic items such as a doctors medical bag are quite common and actually have a market value of less than this although the older they are the more they are worth. Other items that are more rare or unusual command a far greater price. Items relating to scientific breakthroughs or rare medical documents, particularly any relating to famous cases are worth a lot more. Original documents recording medical procedures can be worth around 1,000. These documents -- or those from the times of early anatomists that are centuries old -- are valuable antiques and therefore worth so much. Any original items relating to famous cases such as that of 'Jack the Ripper' or to those famous in the medical world can carry high prices.

Space Collectibles
There is an increasing interest in collecting items that are connected to space and the science of space. This interest was propelled by the first landing on the moon. As a direct result, badges and pens and other small bits and pieces have been sold although these are usually only worth a few pounds. Serious collectors would be more interested in the models of spaceships, particularly the Russian models. These models replicate spacecraft very well and are constructed to a high level of detail. They are generally worth around 50 to 100. However the most expensive items are memorabilia directly associated with the first ventures into space and the Apollo missions. Photographs (signed) and medals can easily be worth 100 or more.

Buying Scientific Memorabilia
There is a great deal of scientific memorabilia to collect but it is important to remember that, if you are going to buy a more expensive item, you need to find out as much detail about it as possible such as the maker and date it was made. You should investigate thoroughly any marks or damage as these decrease value and whether it is complete with some sort of container or cover. While some companies deal specifically with this memorabilia and their prices are a good guideline to the value of an object, it is possible to get a bargain from non-specialist sellers or individuals who are just looking to make a few pounds
