Collecting trading cards has been a common pastime for many people, young and old, for generations. From an early age, trading cards have been collected extensively by children and have been used as effective currency in primary and secondary schools throughout the country. Going back many generations, trading cards have been produced across the globe and have been sold alongside a number of different products such as bubble gum and cigarettes, covering a vast array of subjects from Baseball to Barbie. Take a look at the tips below to put you on the right track to creating and maintaining your very own trading card collection.

What can you collect
No matter what subjects you are interested in, you will probably find that there will be a related trading card of some kind for you to collect. Depending on your interests you can collect Football, Pokemon, Magic -The Gathering cards, and even searching for examples from the 40's and 50's to find some of the original cigarette cards. One of the great things about trading cards is that you can start your collection wherever you please. You can find new packs for under a pound these days, or look towards the other end of the scale, paying hundreds if not thousands of pounds adding extremely rare cards to your collection. Another benefit is that trading cards are popular across the world, and have been collected for many generations. There certainly isn't any sign that they will go out of fashion any time soon. This all adds to the financial aspect of your collection, ensuring that all of your cards will remain a worthwhile investment.

Where can you buy your first cards?
Due to the sheer number of trading cards in existence throughout the world it is quite difficult to know where to start. The Internet is a haven for all kinds of collectors and trading cards are no exception. Before you even start thinking of buying your first cards, have a look around at some of the trading card forums and collectors sites, which will put you in touch with other collectors. This will give you many ideas of how to start collecting, and even what to collect. You can purchase new cards in many toy and hobby shops and even most newsagents these days. You may however prefer to search for some of the more classic cards in circulation. These can also be found in many places, searching the Internet auctions and classifieds always seems to yield excellent results. Even if you prefer not to purchase across the Internet, you can use it for research. Find out when and where there may be a trade fair in your area. You can even find trading card clubs that will meet to buy sell and swap many different cards and sets which is also a great way to start.

Condition is paramount
As with many types of collections, the condition of your trading cards is of the highest importance. Just think about what draws you towards a particular card. If you are choosing between one pack that is unopened and another that has scuffs and chunks missing, which one are you going to choose? At the end of the day, everyone is going to want the most aesthetically pleasing cards. You need to put every effort into keeping your entire collection in tip top condition. This will make a huge difference when you come to sell individual items later on down the line. Have a look around at some of the trading card sites and forums which may offer pricing guidelines and you will see the benefit that taking care of your cards provides.

Rarity
As you can imagine, possessing the rarest of cards provides you with a valuable and interesting collection that sets you apart from the rest. The earlier collections contained much fewer cards, due to mass production limitations, and numbers have dwindled over time. If you can find some really unique examples then they are definitely worth considering, you will however have to be prepared to take out an extra mortgage to afford some of them though. These days, many manufacturers have taken to introducing insert cards into selected packs. These are generally few and far between and very varied in their design. This is mainly to drive up the sales of the packs, and makes it much more difficult to collect the set. This is also true of many of the shiny foil cards available. As such, these cards should be retained at all costs unless there is a good chance to make a worthwhile trade! Some people even decide to collect only these cards, making it a time consuming, but lucrative hobby. Unopened packs can also be worth a huge amount in the future, but you just try and sit there with the pack in front of you for the next ten years. The temptation usually gets the better of most collectors in the hope that they'll find that really special card.

Buying and collecting trading cards can be an engaging and addictive hobby. You may find that you can start collecting for under a pound, but you will be guaranteed to spend many times more that as you progress with your collection. The main thing is to enjoy your collection and keep them in the best condition you can, as the future value could certainly surprise you with time.
