Now that you've bought the latest computer, wouldn't you like to beef it up with state-of-the-art accessories? Many accessories are not mere embellishments; they're actually add-ons which can help you to get much more out of your machine. Before we get into further details, let's have a quick look at what exactly computer accessories are. When we say computer accessories we basically mean memory and storage, speakers, mice and keyboards. Let's take a quick tour through a few of these items.

Memory and Storage

Many of today's computers have the option of extending in-built memory so that a whole range of applications and perhaps games will enjoy better performance. Think of memory as the computer's work space. Applications and information are read in from the hard drive and used within the memory. Memory can be far more quickly accessed than the hard disk. Thus, the more memory you have, the faster your applications will perform as the computer won't be spending time swapping things to and from the hard drive all time. Additional memory is primarily available in the form of add-on memory cards which, unless you are comfortable with a screwdriver (and the warranty won't be invalidated) are best installed by a specialist. Other forms of add-on memory and storage include flash cards, memory sticks, SD cards and external hard drives.

Secure Digital (SD) memory cards come in capacities usually starting from 512 MB and rising to 1 GB or more. There are three physical sizes - namely micro, mini and regular. These data cards can be used a specific number of times. That is, they can be written to only a certain number of times before they cease to work. This isn't as much of a constraint as it sounds: usually these cards can cope with at least 10,000 cycles, probably far more than is needed for the life of the computer! Additionally, they're usually equipped with mechanical write protection switches.

Another popular form of add-on data storage is known as a flash card or a flash drive. Some refer to these data storage devices as pen drives also, possibly because they look a little like flat and wide pens. The most popular models have some ten years data retention capacities and come in a range of attractive colours. They are simply plugged in to the computer's USB port for the transfer or retrieval of data. Many have capacities in excess of 2 GB and because of the ease with which they can be carried around have become one of the most popular forms of external data storage.

External hard drives are also falling in price. Again, these usually connect via the computer's USB port and allow you to extend the long term storage capabilities of the machine by augmenting its internal hard disk drive. Capacities vary widely with 2-300 GB now commonly available. Speakers

The most appropriate speaker system will be determined by three criteria: the degree of portability required; your quality and budgetary requirements; and the available outputs from your computer's built-in sound card (which can of course be upgraded if required). These come in various shapes and sizes. At one end are the classical pair of stereo two-driver box shaped speakers from leaders in acoustics and sound such as Bose, Sony and Yamaha. These speakers generally come in black, silver or white. These are usually equipped with in-built mega bass and have a magnetic protective shield and independent on-off-volume control switches. These speakers are able to provide a true stereo effect and good quality (although rarely audiophile) sound.

Single unit speaker systems are also popular with people who are constantly on the move. Sony's Universal Active Speaker System and Bose' Lifestyle RoomMate series are popular choices among those who want portability without sacrificing too much in the way of sound quality.

For those who plan to use a speaker system in situ and who are thus less concerned with portability, at the opposite end are the five or seven speaker multimedia systems marketed by Bose, Sony and other major brands. Current offerings are akin to min home theatre systems, with 5:1 or even 7:1 surround sound, together with a subwoofer for deep base reproduction.

Finally, we have those slim wireless and Bluetooth connectivity enabled speakers which are as much a style statement as they are efficient. These come in a range of shapes and sizes. Sony has a foldable version; JBL provides a sub-woofer system in one of its portable models; the sub-woofer system and the two main speakers come in one block in one version and in another version the main speakers and the corresponding sub-woofers are provided in two separate units. The choice is seemingly endless.

Mice and Keyboards

As far as keyboards are concerned, many feel that Apple Computers are way ahead of the competition, particularly with one model which is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and made of aluminium: a treat to the eye and the fingers alike, with the keys conveying such a crisp and concise feel. Sony also manufactures a wireless keyboard with a connectivity range of approximately 30 feet (although you may struggle to see the screen from this distance unless using your Plasma TV for the purpose).

We should also mention market leader Logitech's keyboards at this point. Long time users vouch for their build quality and refuse to change brands.

When you're choosing a mouse you'll be spoilt for choice. There so many colours and shapes on the market. The optical mice which are nowadays shipped with almost every PC come in various ergonomic shapes and sizes. These offer the key advantage of no moving parts (the old fashioned track ball) to wear out or become clogged with those crumbs from your desk!

When choosing a mouse, there is no substitute for physically trying it - our hands differ widely. There are also mice designed specifically with left handed users in mind.

Finally, there are of course mice with Bluetooth and other wireless connectivity which provide freedom from wires while working on a computer. There is even a 'talking' mouse which doubles up as a fully functional internet phone.
