If you have a hobby or enjoy a particular form of craft then you are likely to buy crafts and hobbies books and magazines to help you out from time to time. These books and magazines can help you hone your existing skills, they can teach you new things and they can give you plenty of ideas for projects whether you are beginner or an experienced hobbyist. Available across a really diverse range of crafts and hobby subjects these books and magazines are always popular.

An introduction to crafts and hobbies books and magazines
There are all kinds of options when it comes to buying crafts and hobbies books and magazines. Even a quick look at the magazine shelf in your local newsagent will show you that people like to buy magazines on all kinds of strange and wonderful hobbies and crafts. Basically, there seem to be books and magazines available for just about any craft or hobby -- no matter how obscure!

Popular examples of crafts and hobbies books and magazines at the moment include subjects such as hand-made cards, interior design, scrap booking, DIY, model trains, woodworking, dolls houses, dressmaking and kids craft activities.

If you are interested in leaning more about a craft or hobby then you may want to make a start with a book -- magazines here may not give you beginner's knowledge especially if they work on a monthly instalment basis. Crafts and hobbies books come in all shapes and sizes from pocket sized guides through to large reference books.

Magazines in this sector will usually appear on a regular basis -- i.e. every week, every two weeks or every month. Some magazines work on a 'stand-alone' basis in that you do not need to buy every issue (although many hobbyists will do so!) and can just pick and choose issues to buy depending on how interesting the contents may be to you and the projects you are working on. Some magazines, however, will work on an instalment basis where you buy every issue of the magazine and complete a project during the time that it is published - for example, a dolls house magazine may give you parts every week to make a dolls house so by the end of the instalments you should have learned how to put it together!

Things to think about before buying new crafts and hobbies books and magazines
Although book sellers nowadays often discount or bundle offer books you may not find that you get a discount on crafts and hobbies books most of the time as these are viewed as niche sectors. Magazines always tend to be sold at the retail price -- if they are not sold then the retailer generally returns them to the publisher. That said, it is possible to pick up some cut-price crafts and hobbies magazines in smaller book shops every now and then.

If you are considering starting to buy an instalment crafts and hobbies magazine then think about whether you will really commit to buying the whole series and how much it will cost you overall. These magazines often heavily discount their first issue but the costs thereafter may be higher than the value of the project you will ultimately (and hopefully!) complete.

Things to think about before buying crafts and hobbies books and magazines second hand
If you are a serious collector of crafts and hobbies books and magazines then quality and condition will probably be an issue for you when buying second hand. If you simply want a book that you'll consult occasionally for the projects you'll be working on then you may not be that bothered about the condition of the book (although it's generally wise to check that all the pages are there.!)

Checking the condition of a book or magazine in a shop is easy enough but you may need to ask more questions if you decide to buy crafts and hobbies books and magazines online. You'll usually find that an online seller will have a digital photo (or will be willing to take one) of an item that they are selling so that you can at least take a look at it before you buy it.

Do ask specific questions about the crafts and hobbies books and magazines you may be considering buying before you commit to anything -- especially if quality is an issue to you. You need to know, for example, that all the pages are in place and whether there is any damage to the cover, spine or pages (i.e. whether anyone has torn sections out or written in the book or magazine). If you are buying a crafts and hobbies reference book that is published regularly (i.e. every year) then you also need to know which year's edition you are getting.
