Our interest in DIY, home improvement, interior design and renovation has soared over recent years fuelled mainly by repeated historical booms in property prices and further stimulated mainly by the media, particularly popular television. Popular programmes such as 'Changing Rooms', 'Grand Designs' and '60 minute makeover' have inspired our imagination and tempted us into putting more of our heart into our homes. 'The Million Pound Property Experiment', 'House Doctor' and 'Location Location Location' have taught us that with a certain investment of thought and a lot of know-how we can all make a profit from our homes.

Collectable Home & DIY Publications
Magazines and books have followed closely in line and profited from this popular surge of interest in our homes. Many of them such as 'Good Housekeeping' and 'Woman and Home', have in fact been around for generations. Vintage copies of these magazines have become highly collectable items in recent years, opening a window to a world vastly different from our own. They offer a fascinating insight into how fashion trends in home decor have evolved over the years as well as how our social values and shopping and living habits have evolved. The fascinating content of these publications, with photographs of the decoration and furnishing styles of the past can even provide inspiration and ideas for creating a vintage style home. Creating a '30s or '40s style home has become all the rage in recent times and has led to a surge in the value of art deco and retro style ornaments and household objects.

Popular Monthly Publications
'Ideal Home', 'House Beautiful', 'Period Living' and 'BBC Homes & Antiques' are just a few examples of popular monthly publications today. Their pages abound with stunning colour photographs depicting innovative styles and colour schemes in beautiful settings. They offer suggestions for delectable soft furnishings, furniture, lighting and ornaments and teach us how to arrange items in order to best enhance the beauty of our homes. We are even taken into readers' homes where we can marvel at amazing changes they have made to their own surroundings. These magazines are particularly useful as they offer price comparisons between items available in different stores and suggest both stores and online companies where items can be purchased at the best price. They also perform quality and efficiency tests on popular white goods such as dishwashers and can therefore prove invaluable for choosing the right model. And for anyone lacking inspiration and imagination when it comes to decorating the home, these publications can be an excellent way of achieving the goal, a beautiful home can be created purely and simply by copying from a photograph!

Equality in DIY
DIY was always traditionally a man's domain but recent times have seen DIY publications increasingly aimed at women, who are ever more eager to take on these challenges themselves! The prices charged today by most tradesmen are becoming prohibitive and this is one important reason why we are prepared to tackle the job ourselves. Publications such as 'Home DIY' are full of inspiring ideas and helpful tips and tricks of the trade to help you make a complete success of any DIY project no matter what your level of expertise. Other publications go further, 'Move or Improve' offers practical information on building extensions and remodelling the home. There are also of course thousands of books available covering the whole spectrum of subjects from laying loft insulation to bathroom tiling and with a little bit of patience and common sense anyone can follow the advice and tips given, and see a home DIY project through to a successful conclusion.

Environmental Factors
The highly topical subjects of the environment and global warming are now creeping into the area of home and DIY publications as our interests focus on how to create the environmentally friendly home. Publications explaining how to carry out environmentally friendly improvements to the home, how to save energy, compost, recycle and even grow our own vegetable patch are beginning to take up their rightful positions on our book shelves - bringing our homes into harmony with nature will certainly be one of our objectives for the future.

Our home is the biggest investment we will ever make and more and more we are realising the importance of having a beautiful home. What we create within our home will provide us with comfort and well-being for many years and is also equally important in defining the image of ourselves that we portray to those we invite inside. We all need help and
inspiration to create the best home environment we can, and these excellent publications are fantastic for providing all the advice and inspiration we need to reach our goals
