There are a diverse range of driving schools in the UK. From national driving schools such as The AA who cover most of the UK, to local, one-man driving schools that cover a single town or area. Selecting the appropriate driving school from the vast array of driving schools that exist is not an exact science. Personal recommendation is perhaps the best method to start looking for a driving instructor. If a particular driving school worked for a friend and they were happy with the service the driving school provided, it's a step in the right direction. However, because a particular instructor suited your friend, it doesn't necessarily follow that they will suit you too. You can also look in the Yellow Pages, you local newspaper or on the Internet.

Cost
Only a registered Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) or Provisional Driving Instructor (PDI) can charge money for teaching you to drive. An ADI or PDI must be registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), and display a certificate on the windscreen of the car while teaching you. The prices charged by most driving schools don't seem to differ very much. Expect to pay around 18 to 24 for a one-hour lesson. If the price is cheaper than this, be sure to ascertain the qualifications of the instructor. They may not be qualified, hence the low price. Some instructors will offer you a free trial lesson. This is a good idea, as it will help you see if you're going to like the instructor and their teaching style.Driving schools all offer discounts if you book in blocks of ten lessons+ (eleven for the price of ten, or similar). Some driving schools will also offer student and NHS discounts, but overall, the cost per hour between driving schools differs very little.

Services Offered
Additional services offered by most driving schools include:
  • A door to door service.
  • A full hours driving lesson (not 50 minutes teaching and 10 minutes driving you home).
  • No car sharing (no other pupil in the back waiting their turn).
Make sure you know exactly what the driving school is offering you before you book your lessons.

You should always make sure that the driving schools you choose have signed the voluntary Code of Practice. This code of practice, drawn up and agreed by the DSA and the driving instruction industry, is designed to provide a framework in which all driving schools and instructors should operate, and covers instructors' personal and professional conduct, driving schools advertising and their complaints procedure.

Qualifications
A trainee driving instructor can give lessons and some driving schools do employ such instructors. If your driving instructor displays a green badge in their car it means they are fully qualified. If the badge is pink then the driving instructor is still training. In order to get a pink badge, the trainee driving instructor has to pass parts 1 & 2 of the DSA Driving Instructor examination. This involves a driving theory test, a multiple-choice test plus a hazard perception video test and an advanced ADI driving test, which is of a much higher standard than the driving test you will take. They must also have done least 40 hours ADI training.

A further 20 hours training is required shortly after the badge is issued. Part 3 of the exam is a practical test that examines the trainee's instructional ability.
The DSA grades UK Driving Instructors as:
Grade 4 - the driving instructor is competent
Grade 5 - the driving instructor is good
Grade 6 - the driving instructor has reached a very high standard

Other considerations you need to think about are:

Type of Car
Most instructors teach in small cars, but be sure you are happy with the car in which you'll be learning.

Male or Female Instructor
Larger driving schools have both, but many driving instructors work for themselves.

Intensive Driving Courses
These last for a full week, with a test at the end. However, they don't suit everyone's learning style.

Disability
If you have a disability, look for instructors / schools offering specialised tuition and suitably adapted vehicles. Many instructors will have taken courses in teaching those with disabilities of various types.

Theory Test
Many driving schools / instructors offer assistance to help you pass the theory test.

These are the facts. The choice is yours. Choose wisely and pass first time!
