Its becoming increasingly common for UK shoppers to buy exercise and fitness equipment to use at home. Some people may simply buy a pair of dumbbells, a step, an exercise ball or an exercise bike whereas others will buy larger and more complex fitness machines that could take up much of a room. So, what are the important factors to look out for when buying exercise and fitness equipment?

Things to consider when buying exercise and fitness equipment
The first thing to consider is who will be using the equipment and what it will be used for. Many people buy the wrong kinds of equipment as they get carried away by what is on offer. They then either do not use the equipment to maximum effect or they may possibly even cause themselves an injury by using it incorrectly.

So, anybody buying exercise and fitness equipment should think about what they want to achieve from a fitness perspective. Some people simply want to improve their general stamina and fitness and may therefore buy a step or an exercise bike to use at home when they have time. Other people may want to consolidate their efforts at the gym and set up a complete home fitness centre that allows them to work on any area of their body, stamina or fitness as they deem necessary.

It's important to strike a fine balance with exercise and fitness equipment so that you get the maximum benefits. A good piece of equipment should stretch you just enough to put the 'work' in workout! A lot of people overestimate their own abilities and buy equipment that is way too advanced for them. A better way of buying the right equipment is to try and find items that can be adapted as fitness levels change so that you can start off easy and grow with your abilities.

But, before buying any kind of exercise and fitness equipment it is equally important to think about the space that is available to store it. Obviously, this is not an issue if buying a small piece of equipment such as a step, ball or band -- this kind of kit can be easily stored away when not in use. But, larger exercise and fitness machines can take up a lot of room so do make sure that they will fit before buying them.

It is thu important to check the measurements of the equipment as well. And don't just think about whether an exercise machine will fit into a room -- make sure it will be able to fit through the rest of the house on the way to the room. Tight corners and narrow staircases may not accommodate many larger machines if they come ready assembled. This is, in fact, another consideration to make before buying equipment. Many larger pieces of equipment may come ready built or may need to be constructed on site by the user.

Remember that quality is very important here -- buying good quality brands will make sure that the equipment works correctly (and doesn't cause unnecessary accidents), lasts for as long as possible (cheaper equipment may simply fall apart) and does the right job. If you are not sure as to which brands to choose then online reviews and forums are always a good source of information. There's no better way of finding out which brands are reliable and good value (and, most importantly, which ones aren't!) than by checking the opinions of other people who have already used them.

Finally, remember not to get too carried away when buying exercise and fitness equipment. Anybody that wishes to exercise at home should take every effort to make sure that they exercise responsibly. This is, in part, a question of making sure that the equipment is safe and suitable for home use. But, it also means that people should take care not to exercise to excess as that could lead to physical and psychological problems somewhere down the line.

Buying exercise and fitness equipment second hand
A lot of people choose to buy their exercise and fitness equipment second hand -- given that a lot of equipment can be quite costly this is potentially a good way of picking up a bargain and saving some money. Buying in a store may seem the easiest option as you will be able to see the equipment, maybe even try it out, and assess the quality -- but buying online is also simple.

If your preference is to buy online then you may find that there are a lot more options and that you can buy equipment at lower cost. You should also be able to get the equipment you want when you want it. There is no guarantee that a 'bricks and mortar' shop will have the right equipment at the right time.

It is important to make sure that the bargain you get here really is a bargain. Check with the seller to find out what condition the equipment is in. This can be important from a safety perspective. Check that everything works and that the equipment comes with all necessary fittings and so on and that there is no damage to it.

Finally, ask to see photos of the equipment if possible so that there is some form of visual check. And, remember, it's always good to find out why someone is selling exercise and fitness equipment as this can give some modicum of comfort that the sale is legitimate. Many people, for example, will sell on equipment here when they upgrade. Or, they may simply find that they don't actually use the equipment and would far rather sell it and free up some space rather than have it gathering dust around the house.
