If you need a fencing supplier or stonemason but don't know how to go about choosing the right one for your needs then here are some useful tips and advice on how to select a firm that is reputable, reliable and will deliver a high quality service.
FINDING A FENCING SUPPLIER
One of the best ways to find a fencing supplier in your area is to look at classified ads, both online and in local directories. There you should find a list of fencing suppliers and their contact details. It is also a good idea to ask around friends and family. Of course, if you come across a fence that you particularly like and that seems to be just what you were looking for then stop and ask the home or business owner where it was sourced from -- most people will be flattered that you admire their new fence so much! A list of fencing suppliers is also available on the Fencing Contractors Association (FCA) website.
Things to think about when choosing a fencing supplier
Ask if they are a member of the Fencing Contractors Association (FCA) as this means that the supplier is one of a restricted number of specialist fencing suppliers and has fulfilled the Association's membership requirement of reliability, experience, quality, business ethics and compliance with their Code of Conduct. The FCA also incorporates the Association of Safety Fencing Contractors, the Electric Security Fencing Federation and the Gate Automation and Access Barrier Association. Thus, no matter what type of fencing you are looking for try to choose a supplier who is an FCA member. You can check which suppliers are members on the FCA website.
Ask what services they supply. Do they only supply the fencing materials or will they also erect the fence for you. Also ask if they will deliver the fence to your home or workplace.
Ask if you can see examples of the fences they supply and also check if it is possible to see any recommendations from previous clients or to speak to a previous client that has a fence similar to the one you want.
Types of fencing
There are a wide range of different fencing materials now available including timber (of which there are many different types), steel, tubular aluminium, metal panels, wire and PVC. So it is important to make sure that you choose the right type of fencing for your specific requirement. A good fencing supplier should be able to advise you on the pros and cons of each type of fencing. For example, many people opt for timber as it is cheaper up front but it needs to be treated at regular intervals to maintain it properly and it will eventually rot. Steel or aluminium will be more expensive initially but will last longer so this may actually work out cheaper in the long run. If you require a specialised type of fence for security purposes then you may need to look around to find a supplier that deals with this speciality. Also, ask about what type of fence posts are required for your particular type of fence as they may range, even for a wooden fence. Some contractors, for example, will recommend concrete posts with slide-in wood panels. Here, the panels can be easily replaced as the wood ages but the posts themselves should last for decades. This makes future replacement a relatively low cost exercise as the labour involved should be greatly reduced.
Prices
Ask for a price from a few different suppliers so that you can compare prices and be confident that you are being charged fairly. However, do ask for a detailed breakdown of the price to make sure that it includes everything that you need including all the materials (fencing, fence posts etc), delivery, labour and anything else that you need.
FINDING A STONEMASON
You will, again, be able to find a list of local stonemasons on one of the free classified adverts websites. Or, you could ask for recommendations for a stonemason from friends and family. The website of the National Association for Memorial Masons (NAMM) will also be able to provide a list of stonemasons in your area.
What do stonemasons do?
A stonemason can carry out a range of different types of stone work. For example, they can make and engrave headstones, they can design and fit stone flooring or kitchen benches, they can build fireplaces, stone walls and other bespoke garden features as well as carrying out renovation and restoration work on the stone fabric of a building.
Things to think about when choosing a stonemason
Ask if the stonemason is a member of NAMM as all its members are required to work to a high standard and have a good understanding of all matters relating to stone materials.
Stonemasonry is a very specialised business so you should consult the stonemason for advice as to the type of stone that will best suit your particular needs. A good stonemason will be able to offer you detailed guidance and explain the reasons for choosing a particular type of stone for a particular job.
Some stonemasons may specialise in a particular type of stone or a particular type of work such as headstones, fireplaces, walling etc, so make sure that you establish that the stonemason you choose has experience of the specific type of stone work you need.
Ask if you could see examples of the stonemason's previous work. A good stonemason should be able to easily show you a portfolio of examples and be very wary of anyone that does not seem to want to do this.
Ask for a price for your job from a few different stonemasons so that you can compare and be sure that you are paying the right price for the job. However, don't automatically choose the cheapest price because, in this specialist field, you may need to pay a little more in order to make sure that you get the highest quality stonework from a highly skilled and experienced stonemason.
