The financial world can be a bewildering place -- it is full of all kinds of products and services that come with options and decisions to be made at every stage. So, if you are looking to choose a financial product or service -- even if you think you know which one you want -- making the final decision as to which one to apply for can be confusing. Financial products and services on offer range from bank accounts through to credit cards, mortgages, loans, insurance and other products. Each product or service, even from a single provider, may have a number of different variations in itself. If you don't know what you are doing it can be really hard to choose the right product or service and all too easy to simply pick the first deal that looks OK. But, of course, you may not get the best deal this way. So, what is the best way to buy financial products and services.

Things to think about when buying financial products and services
The first thing to do here is to work out what kind of financial product or service you need and then you have to think about which sub-set of the product may be best suited to you. For example, if you are looking to take out a personal loan you also need to think about what kind of personal loan you actually need. For example, do you want a secured loan or an unsecured loan? The secured option involves a major asset -- usually your home -- in the deal but may provide preferential interest rates and a higher potential loan value. You'll also have other issues to consider such as how much to apply for and how long you need the loan to last. Then you'll need to find the best interest rates that you can get so that you don't spend too much money on the loan repayment itself. Finally you will need to consider any set-up or acceptance fees and any early redemption penalties if you are fortunate enough to be able to repay the loan in full before it is complete. There are multiple factors which will determine the best product, not least of which involves your own financial standing. If you have a poor credit history, CCJs or have previously defaulted in some way in repaying a financial commitment, there may be products to suit you but they will come at a price. And that's just loans!

Do your research
So, some fairly serious research is vital here before you apply for any financial product or service -- especially if you have not applied for this kind of product or service before. It may be that you already know enough about the sector to make a quick decision but you may also find that you need some extra help to make the right decision. There are various choices open to you here. Most people will talk to either a specific financial products and services provider or they will seek the help of an independent specialist such as a broker. If you go to a specific provider -- such as a bank or building society -- then bear in mind that they may only be able to give you advice on their own products and services. They generally won't, for example, encourage you to pop next door to a rival bank or to go online and to look at, perhaps, better rates on offer there!

Brokers, IFAs and the FSA
A financial products or services broker or an independent financial advisor (IFA) may be an alternative option for many people. They can generally give impartial advice on a range of products and services across many financial institutions. Some will only give advice and some will help you arrange the products and services you need. Bear in mind that some will look at the whole market for you and some will only deal with certain providers so this is worthwhile checking first - the Financial Services Authority (FSA) regulates these individuals and firms and requires that they clearly declare their position in this regard. They may also charge a fee for their service so this is another issue to consider before you make a decision. Don't deal with any individual or firm unless they are clearly regulated by the FSA (the FSA website can provide guidelines in this regard). This obviously isn't a concern with a major financial institution

If you are approaching either a financial institution directly or going via a broker or IFA you need to look hard at the deals on offer and check that the advice that you are being given is right for you. You need to get the best products and services for you and not for the broker or for the bank! Finally, make sure that you fully understand what you are signing up to -- reading terms and conditions is vital here -- even if they are long and boring! This is especially important if you are looking to apply for some form of credit such as a credit card, loan or mortgage. It is also important that you don't get carried away and apply for more finance than you can reasonably afford to repay as this can lead to financial difficulties down the line.

Getting the best deal
The key thing to remember when you are applying for any kind of financial products and services is that you should be getting the best deal for your needs to maximise the money you have. So, look for the lowest interest rates you can get with the best terms and conditions with credit products -- and the highest interest rates available (again with the best terms!) for savings products and services. Make sure you factor in ALL costs including set-up or arrangement fees, broker or IFA advice fees (if applicable) and any early redemption penalties. This may take a little time and research but -- if it saves you money in the long run then it will be time well spent.

Protect your credit rating
Finally and perhaps above all, NEVER apply for a financial product unless you are serious about doing so. All applications will result in the provider creating a 'footprint' in your credit history which, in itself, may have an adverse effect on your credit rating if you make too many applications within a short space of time. People are increasingly aware as to the need to actively manage their own credit ratings, with firms such as Experian providing services such as Credit Expert which, for a small monthly subscription, allows you to see and track your credit profile and will provide alerts as to changes to it. This can also be useful in monitoring for potential 'identity theft' issues wherein someone else masquerades as you and obtains (and subsequently defaults on repaying) financial services and products in your name.
