Buying a fishing rod can be a very complicated process, with many factors needing to be considered. The choice of rods available may seem overwhelming. The following aims to explaining the advantages and uses of each.

BUYING A FISHING ROD

Float Rod
There is a huge choice of float rods at varying prices. Good, cheap rods are available for about 50. A good rod is a worthwhile investment, as the performance is affected by its construction materials. Rods are made from carbon in one form or another, since carbon has a high strength to weight ratio allowing much thinner rods while retaining the length. A lighter rod it easier to handle, control and is less tiring. A thinner rod reduces air-resistance making it easier and more accurate to cast, especially in windy conditions. The rings through which the line runs are very smooth, to reduce friction. These may be silicon, ceramic or hard chrome. If intending to fish a good way out, a longer rod will give better control when "playing" the fish. If fishing in an enclosed area, a shorter rod of between eleven and thirteen feet will be safer.

Action
"Action" is the term used to describe how a rod bends when placed under strain by a fighting fish.
There are two different types rod tip, hollow or spliced. Hollow tips are considered good to catch carp, tench and chub, able to cope with for quick bites and handle long distance strikes and when using light line.Spliced tips have about twenty-four inches of solid carbon spliced into the end. This rod is a good choice for fast acting fish. Handles are made from cork or foam. Foam is easier to clean, but otherwise there is no evidence of either material being superior.

Ledger Rod
Ledgering is fishing without using a float. Despite being used for centuries, ledgering has shown a recent resurgence amongst anglers. The rod type depends on the venue. Ideally, an angler could use many rods, ranging from seven to thirteen feet. However, cost obviously becomes a factor. An eleven-foot rod is a suitable first rod, enabling longer casts while retaining the sensitivity. Since no float is used, a different detection method is required.

Swing Tip
A swing tip is screwed onto the end of the rod and is used for catching bream on still waters. The stronger the current or the deeper the water, the longer the swing tip required.

Quiver Tip
Quiver tipping is a more common method amongst anglers who fish in faster waters. Different sensitivities of tip are available. If only owning one ledger rod, use an interchangeable quiver tip, rather than a swing tip.

BUYING FISHING TACKLE

Reels

Fixed Spool Reels
This is the most common reel type, due to its power and ease of use. A drag system allows the line to release if placed under extreme pressure. There are numerous reels of this type available, ranging from about 15 to ten times that amount.

Closed Face Reels
These are predominantly used for river fishing, but can be useful when fishing still waters, in windy conditions. This type of reel is ideal for float fishing. Such reels are generally in the mid-price range, between 50 and 80.

Centrepin Reels
This is a very uncomplicated system, using a revolving drum within a semi-enclosed casing with a ratchet drag. The handles are attached to the drum itself.

Multiplier Reels
These are very similar to Fixed Spool Reels. They can make casting awkward, as the line can overrun resulting in tangling. Brakes have been added to modern reels to reduce this problem. These reels are fixed above the rod, not underneath.

Floats
Floats come in a variety of shapes and sizes, their use dependent on the weather conditions.

Waggler Float
A versatile float is the "Waggler." It is easy to cast and a stable float once in the water. The line from the float to the rod is completely submerged. There are two types, straight and bodied. Wagglers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, their use dependent on the weather conditions. In windy conditions, a heavier float is needed (to make it castable). A good tackle dealer will be able to advise on the appropriate type of float(s) to use in particular environments and conditions.

Hooks
The essential aspects of all hooks are similar. Hooks should be well tempered and thin in the "wire" (body).
The wire thickness is important. The weight of a thick hook can cause light bait to sink too quickly when "freelining," (using no float, but allowing the bait to sink naturally). Obviously, the point and barb must be sharp, with the barb set close to the point.

LEAD WEIGHTS

Arlesey Bomb
The "Arlesey Bomb" was designed by Richard Walker for casting into Arlesey lake. It is easy to cast because of its streamlined shape and has less chance of catching on the bottom.

Plummet
A plummet is used to determine the water depth. Attach the plummet to the hook and gently cast into the water. When the tip of the float is just proud of the water, the bait will be on the bottom.

Lead Shot
Round split shot are used to hold weights in place, by pressing them across the line. They are available in various sizes.
