Food and drink books and magazines can be used to obtain information about the sourcing and preparation of food and drink. Health and lifestyle publications are also available, which document the nutritional value of food and how it can improve your wellbeing. Magazines are published at regular intervals and so keep up to date with the ever changing trends, as well as being a good source of information for food and drink.

General Cookbooks
Most cookbooks have a specific theme, they are written for a given type of food or budget. Baking is a very popular area, as are children's cookbooks and simple cheap recipes for students. Publishers sometimes produce a series of books, where each book focuses on different food types, such as soups, smoothies, pastry or desserts. There are magazines and books that are devoted to drinks, the most popular being wine, which is an industry in itself.

Celebrity Chefs
The best selling food books tend to be those written by celebrity chefs. Celebrity chefs are those who have been featured on the television and/or are well known due to the reputation of their restaurant. Some food writers may have spent a significant amount of time working in restaurants. Particularly popular are the books that accompany the television series in which the celebrity is currently appearing. The themes of these books vary massively, from quick meals for a family dinner, to how to cook the perfect meals regardless of the cost/time/equipment required.

Diet books
The diet culture is now huge. Books and magazines tell us how we can lose weight, gain energy and generally feel more healthy. In response to the size zero debate the current trend has moved away from strict crash diets, which massively restrict the daily calorie intake. The focus has shifted to the foods that are nutritionally beneficial, a number of "superfoods" have been identified as they have some health benefit.

Some strict weight loss diets are still common, such as the Atkins diet, the South beach diet and the dandelion and grapefruit diet. Such diets have come under some scrutiny as it is questioned whether they are healthy to keep up over a prolonged period of time. Any diet that claims to magically shift a lot of weight whilst retaining energy levels is controversial, often it is possible to initially lose weight quickly but this cannot be maintained. Some aspects of such diets may however have beneficial effects on some people's lifestyle. It is worth remembering that a change in diet may have a direct effect on your health, and diet books should recommend that if you have any known conditions to seek advice from a GP before embarking on specific diets.

Special dietary requirements
More people are choosing to cut certain foods out of their diet for health or other reasons. People are becoming more aware of food intolerances and allergies as well as more serious diseases directly linked to food, such as Coeliac disease and diabetes. As learning to live without certain types of food may be difficult, there is a lot of advice in books and magazines on how to cook good dairy, wheat and meat free food. Vegetarianism has long been a popular life choice for some people, vegetarians and vegans now have a large choice when it comes to cookbooks and magazines. Diets based on religious beliefs, such as the Kosher diet are also catered for in the literature.

Ethical food
Another massive trend in food at the moment is the idea of ethical food. This includes locally produced, or even home grown food, organic and fair trade food. Books and magazines are available that describe how to grow and cook your own food. Linked to this is a big drive to cook local seasonal food, magazines will have information on where food can be bought, e.g. local farmers markets, and cookbooks are available with great recipes that are relevant to each season in the UK. This is particularly beneficial to help decrease the number of food miles that a person consumes, therefore aiding the fight against carbon emissions and climate change.

Ingredients that cannot be sourced locally, such as tropical fruits, coffee and chocolate, can be ethically traded. To ensure that the locals are not exploited in the production of food the Fairtrade foundation was set up. It is possible to buy Fairtrade cookbooks and again magazines often have information on the suppliers of ethically traded food.

Dinner Parties
Food goes hand in hand with a person's lifestyle and, therefore, books are available which show people how to host the perfect dinner party. This not only includes the food, but also the drinks to accompany it and how to set the table. Many different themed dinner parties may be described in the books including those to accompany our favourite festivals throughout the year, such as Christmas, Halloween or Valentines day.

Restaurant Guides
Guides are regularly published with directories of where to eat out. Such guides include reviews along with the quality and cost of the food. These books can prove useful in finding local restaurants to suit your taste and budget.

Second hand books and magazines
If buying second had books and magazines the publication date should be noted as some information contained may be out of date. Having said that a lot of food related information, particularly basic recipes are universal and so will be relevant whenever they are published. The condition of some books and magazines may not be perfect if they are second hand.
