Whether you want to start to learn a language, or improve the skills you already have, a good way of improving is to invest in some literature. There are now many ways of learning a new language; you can choose from many different styles of work books, combined with other material such as interactive CD's and listening exercises. Before you make any hasty purchases, it is worth considering a few things which are outlined below.
Buying Foreign Language Books and Magazines
Books and magazines are a very useful way of learning a new language and improving your current skills. They can even be a good way of keeping in touch with your second language, especially if you don't get much opportunity for practice. It is worth spending a bit of time pondering what to buy; after all you don't want to waste your money on buying something that isn't right for you. Have a look at some of the suggestions here, which will hopefully make the buying process a little easier.
Think about How You Will be Using your New Language
Depending on what you need you language for, can play a big part in the material you choose to learn from. Obviously everyone needs the basics, and you'll need a beginner level book to cover this, but where you go from there depends on what you want from you language. For example if you want to learn a new language for a holiday, then choose material that has a heavy focus on conversational skills, as that will be the main requirement. Look out for phrase books that cover things like asking for directions and ordering in a restaurant. If you need another language for business purposes, then look out for material that is geared towards the business world as this will introduce you to words and phrases that won't be covered in regular material. The same also applies if you're a scientist and need to translate papers from foreign languages. The phrases and words that you will need to translate a scientific document will be very different from the words and phrases used by a tourist on holiday.
Studying Hard
If you require books and magazines on foreign languages because you are studying for a qualification, then make sure you choose material that is right for the particular exam you're studying for. Your teacher will be able to point you in the right direction of the literature that has been set by the exam board. This presents a good opportunity to buy second hand material from other students that have already completed the course. Not only will this save you some money, but it will also put you in touch with other students who might be able to offer some advice on your course, or even practice conversing with you. It can be difficult to find people to practice speaking with, which is crazy as this is usually the primary reason why people decide to learn a new language. What's the use in learning a new language if you can't converse?
Not Only for Beginners
There are language books and magazines out there to cater for all levels of ability, not just those wanting to learn something new. It is possible to buy fiction and non-fiction books in foreign languages. These, along with foreign language magazines, will help you on your way to becoming fluent and understanding the language like a native. You will be able to pick up and begin to understand phrases and colloquialisms that may not translate directly into English. Books and magazines also provide an excellent way of keeping up your language skills if you are no longer having lessons or are short of people to converse with.
Where to Buy
When buying foreign language books and magazines, look out for specialist retailers; they will be able to help you make more informed choices. You will also find a wealth of material over the internet and in the foreign language sections of most major book stores. However it is also well worth considering buying second hand material. The larger reference type books such as dictionaries can often be quite expensive, therefore choosing a second hand option may save you money. Because the books will be cheaper, this could mean you'll be able to make your money go further and buy a range of material, which may make things more interesting and even help you learn quicker. Buying second hand is also the green option, it's far better to recycle. If someone has books they no longer need then it's a shame to have them go to waste, it's much nicer for them to be passed on to give enjoyment and utility to someone else. Buying books in this way may also put you in touch with other like minded individuals who may be able to offer advice on good literature choices or even the best places to go for lessons or to practice your language skills. However there are a few things to consider when buying second hand material. Be aware that these are not new items so don't be disappointed if something has a 'worn-in' feel, although the amount of wear and tear of an item should be reflected fairly in the asking price. Also read the advert carefully to make sure you know exactly what you are buying and check the terms and conditions; these will probably be down to the individual seller. Don't be afraid of contacting the seller to ask about the item, and make sure you feel comfortable with the price you are paying. Most people will want to get rid of the items they are advertising and should be willing to help, if they won't then perhaps question their motives.
