In recent years there has been a real surge in the popularity of games and quiz DVDs. In some cases these DVDs are interactive, so the whole family or a group of friends can sit together and take part in their own quiz or game!

Popular types of games and quiz DVDs
There are all kinds of options available in the games and quiz DVD sector. Some people like to buy DVDs that tie in to TV games and quizzes, some like to buy DVD versions of classic games and quizzes, and some buy general games and quizzes such as football quizzes or pub trivia games. And of course, there's nothing to stop you buying all three if you like!

Where to find games and quiz DVDs
You can easily pick up new releases and standard types of games and quiz DVDs in your local DVD or entertainment shop. And, if you want to get them cheaper you can also find them in second hand shops and in charity shops (if you're lucky when you visit for a browse!)

A lot of people however, like to buy these kinds of DVDs online; in most cases this will work out cheaper than buying in the high street. Do make sure however, that the postage costs you'll pay to have your DVD(s) sent to you don't turn a cheap bargain into an expensive purchase!

Things to look out for when buying games and quiz DVDs
It's always wise to try and avoid buying pirated copies of DVDs, as we all know that they aren't legal. But, what you may not realise is that copies may not actually work in the way that an original DVD would. And, buying an interactive quiz DVD that doesn't let you get interactive is a waste of money no matter how cheap the copy was!

Do remember that you do need the DVD to play on your DVD player. DVDs have designated regions (the UK for example is region 1) and a player that plays region 1 discs won't play a region 2 disc. If you have a multi-region player then don't worry, it should play DVDs from any region without a problem.

If you manage to find a game or quiz DVD second hand on the high street then do check it out to make sure that it looks to be in good condition. If it has a lot of deep looking scratches then you may not be able to play the game or quiz at all as it may skip.

Buying games and quiz DVDs online
Buying games and quiz DVDs online can be a lot cheaper (especially if you buy them second hand), and it can be a lot easier to find the DVD you want when you want it. High street stores may not, after all, have the room to stock the titles you want!

One of the disadvantages of buying online is that it can be hard to work out whether the DVD is in good condition as you cannot see it for yourself. The easiest way round this is to ask the seller to provide a digital photo of the case and the DVD so you can have a quick look at it. Most sellers will do this in any case. If they show a stock photo then ask for one of the actual DVD.

Don't be worried about asking the seller questions about the condition of the second hand DVD and why they are selling it. Ask them if it plays OK and if it works OK. Ask if there is any damage to the disc and if the inserts (and instructions!) are still there (and intact!).

Selling pirated DVDs is big business online so do be careful here. Look for holograms and signs that the seller is selling copies. If a person lists 25 copies of the same games or quiz DVD, then they either had a bad birthday in terms of presents or they are selling copies!

A good seller will have some kind of returns policy in place in case you end up with a defective DVD. If they don't automatically list their returns policy then ask them what they would do if you had a complaint. You want the best chance of getting your money back at minimal cost. Check out the postage and packing costs before you buy anything. You want the DVD to be delivered safely but you don't need to pay extortionate charges to get it posted; remember that many sellers look to make their money on postal charges rather than on selling the item in the first place. So, you may have to weigh up whether high postal costs are bearable if you get a bargain price for the DVD you want.
