Towards the end of winter and at the beginning of the spring is a good time to start preparing your garden for summer. If you have fantasies of lounging out in your own little bit of paradise, maybe even hosting a barbeque or two, but don't know where to start then there is lots of useful literature out there to help you achieve your dream. Hopefully there will be some ideas here to help you along the way.

Buying gardening and outdoors books and magazines
Everyone loves to be outside and with global warming bringing warmer summers it is becoming increasingly important for people to have that perfect outside space. The trouble is how do you go about it? Not everyone is naturally green fingered and so it can be useful to browse some books and magazines to give you a few ideas and hopefully save on the fees of a landscape gardener.

For first timers
If you're new to gardening and don't know where to start, don't go mad and overload yourself with lots of different books, it's highly likely you'll end up confused. Instead look out for books that give a little bit of advice on everything -- perhaps something akin to a garden encyclopaedia that guides you through creating a new garden from scratch. Also don't be too ambitious at first, keep things simple and then add more as you become more experienced.

Looking for something new
It's not only the inexperienced that need gardening books, if you're considering a new project for your garden then it can be useful to look at some literature. Perhaps you want to start a vegetable patch or make a herb garden, there might even be a specific type of flower you want to start growing. You could be aiming high and considering adding a feature to your garden, such as a pond or some new decking. There are books available on many different topics and before you embark on something new it's always worth having a read up, just make sure you're properly prepared and don't encounter any nasty surprises!

Green fingered gods and goddesses
If you're an expert gardener and have everything sorted in your little green world, then why not invest in some gardeners' magazines, or even take up a subscription. These will provide information on things to do in the garden in line with the seasons and will also give you new ides. You'll also be able to keep up with current garden trends (if that's your thing) and keep up to date with gardening shows and offers.

New or second hand?
When investing in books it's worth considering buying them second hand. The larger reference type books such as garden encyclopaedias can often be quite expensive and so you could save yourself some money buy choosing a second hand option. Because the books will be cheaper this could mean you'll be able to make your money go further. Just think -- you could buy your book on how to construct a pond and have enough money left to buy another book on how to build a nice bit of decking to admire it from! Buying second hand is also the green option, it's far better to recycle. If someone has books they no longer need then it's a shame to have them go to waste, it's much nicer for them to be passed on to give enjoyment and utility to someone else. However there are a few things to consider when buying second hand. Be aware that these are not new items so don't be disappointed if something has a worn-in feel. Also read the advert carefully to make sure you know exactly what you are buying and check the terms and conditions, these will probably be down to the individual seller. Don't be afraid of contacting them to ask about the item and make sure you feel comfortable with the price you are paying. Most people will want to get rid of the items they are advertising and should be willing to help, if they won't then perhaps question their motives.

Other resources
As well as books and magazines there are also lots of online gardening websites. These usually have forums where people can discuss their gardening problems, which is extremely useful if you're just starting out and need advice from someone more experienced. They will also have links to places where you can buy the things you need for your garden. Online shops can often be cheaper than buying in a garden centre and there is the advantage of having things delivered to your door. This is especially helpful if you don't have a car as garden equipment is usually quite heavy. However don't dismiss your local garden centre, the staff there will be able to help you if you have any queries and show you the right things to buy. Finally if any of your friends or family have green fingers then offer to do something for them in return for their help in the garden, after all many hands make light work and when you're creating something beautiful it's nice for it to be shared and enjoyed by those you love!
