Over the last few decades the gay and lesbian lifestyle has become much more acceptable to the general population and as such the amount of literature available on the subject has also become more varied and plentiful. Saying this, some of the undeniable classics of today were written by gay and lesbian authors and many titles and story lines take on a whole new aspect when the sexuality of the author is known. It is now easy to purchase what is classed as homosexual literature and there are thousands of excellent novels and biographies just waiting to be to read, regardless of your own personal sexual preferences.

Choosing a book to read
The majority of gay and lesbian books can be placed into a number of categories. Firstly, there are the books that have a homosexual storyline or that contain homosexual characters. The authors of these books generally tend to focus on the idea of being gay or lesbian in today's society and they often describe the homosexual way of life whilst also telling the story. These books aren't always written by people who are gay or lesbian themselves however they still allow the reader to get a glimpse of an alternative way of life.

The second category contains books that are written by gay or lesbian authors. Some of the most famous authors of our time were homosexual, including the poet Emily Dickinson, Oscar Wilde, Rudyard Kipling, Bram Stoker and maybe even Shakespeare. When the works of these authors are read with the knowledge that the writer was homosexual, the story lines and characters are often seen in a different light and this makes reading the book for a second time even more interesting.

A third category of gay and lesbian literature contains the biographies and autobiographies of the authors themselves. These can be highly interesting and enjoyable and often describe what life is like being a homosexual celebrity or well known author.

Finding books with gay or lesbian story lines
Many new authors who write about gay or lesbian subjects publish their books each year. Some choose to self-publish, especially if their writing is controversial or disliked by the majority of publishing houses. Others use smaller publishing houses to release their first book and then expand in size as they become better known. Either way, hundreds of works of fiction, non-fiction, drama, poetry, mystery, science fiction and horror enter the market annually and it might be worth looking at the smaller publishing companies for new gay and lesbian literature.

Another place to look is on the Internet, especially if you don't want to visit a book store to look there. The advantage of the Internet is that you can often find second hand copies of more obscure book titles for much lower prices than if you bought them new. You can probably find a wide range of gay and lesbian literature on the Internet with just a little bit of research.

Buying gay and lesbian magazines
In addition to books, there are also a number of magazine titles that focus on homosexual subject matter. These titles range from very mild gay and lesbian interests through to those that contain full nudity and so on. There are a few small production magazines available on-line which give advice and information to readers while containing helpful articles and features that are designed to make life easier. They may also contain the odd half naked man or women! Others simply focus on gay and lesbian pornography and in most cases these have to be ordered on-line. Buying this kind of material second hand is also an option if you know where to look on the Internet.

Buying second hand books and magazines
As with any second hand books and magazines there are a few things to look for when buying gay and lesbian material. Firstly, any books should be in good condition with clean and uncreased covers and pages. The spine should be as free from creases as possible so there is no risk of pages coming loose when you read the book. You should also ask the seller about any other marks that might have been made by previous owners, especially if the book is a rare copy or a first edition.

Magazines should have all their staples intact and again they should be as free from creases and marks as possible. It might be that some editions come with extra sections and if you can buy these as well then so much the better. Buying second hand magazines often allows you get multiple editions for the same price as you would pay for one new edition and so if you can find second hand gay or lesbian magazines on-line then it will probably be worth buying them.

Conclusion
Thankfully today's society is much more tolerant of the homosexual lifestyle than it has ever been before and this means it is much easier to buy books and magazines with a gay or lesbian nature. Buying such reading material second hand can save you a lot of money and if you do a little research there are plenty of titles and authors to choose from.
