There are three basic types of golf club:
1. Woods.
Woods are used for hitting the ball a long way. They are called woods because, traditionally, the clubheads were made from persimmon wood. Nowadays, clubheads are made from titanium, steel or a combination of titanium and graphite. Many golfers find it difficult to hit the ball with woods. However, there have been so many technological advancements in club design, including wood/iron "hybrid" clubs that they are easier to hit than ever. Fairway woods, usually numbered 3 to 7, are designed specifically to use from the fairway, rather than the tee.
2. Irons
Irons can do everything that the woods can do, but they don't hit the ball as far. Irons are numbered from 1 to 9, and you have iron clubs called wedges. The No.1 iron hits the ball low and long, while the No.9 and the wedge irons hit higher, shorter shots.
3. Putters.
The putter is to give the ball a smooth roll across the green to get it into the hole. It is the only club that isn't designed to hit the ball into the air.
Your first set of golf clubs will probably be or probably were a "mix and match" combination of
"hand-me-downs" from relatives and friends. Assorted of clubs in varying conditions, from different manufacturers, is no cause for embarrassment. Many professionals still have favourite clubs from their youth, which they refuse to discard. The Rules of Golf allow a maximum of 14 clubs. You do not have to carry all 14 or have a matching set. At first, even if you have a full set of clubs you probably will not use them all. The more you play, the more you will realise which clubs suit your game, and you will use these clubs most often.
Shaft Flex
Junior or novice golfers almost invariably play with shafts that are too stiff to suit their swing. The "flex" or stiffness or a golf club shaft should be suited to the swing speed of its user. Many pro shops will have a device to measure your swing speed at the point of impact with the ball. Generally, the following rules apply:
Under 60 m.p.h.
Very flexible, often marked "F."
60-80 m.p.h.
Flexible, often marked "A."
80-95 m.p.h.
Regular flex, usually marked "R."
Stiff "S" and extra stiff "XS" shafts are also made, but these are strictly for the low-handicap amateur or professional.
Length
The length of your clubs is very important because balance when you swing is vital. If your clubs are not the correct length, you will stand in an unbalanced position. If you are unbalanced at address, your body will struggle to remain balanced when you swing the club. If you are concentrating on staying balanced, you cannot be concentrating on hitting the ball.
Loft
"Loft" is the angle that the clubface faces upwards when the club sits correctly behind the ball. The loft angle is measured in degrees. A sand wedge faces steeply upwards and will be around 56, your driver is not so steep and will be around 11 to 13. Loft is why your irons hit the ball different lengths even though you swing them at the same speed.
Weight
Clubhead weight and overall weight are very important. There are two weight measurements for clubs: the swing weight and the static weight. The swing weight is the relation between the length of the club and the weight of the head. Static weight is the actual weight of the club. Often, the best way to judge the correct weight is to test different clubs and decide which weight feels best.
Where to Buy?
Professionals' Shops
Golf professionals are trained to know golf equipment and which clubs will suit you best. If you are taking lessons from a professional, ask if they have a club fitting service. If you have problems with the clubs, the pro will be at hand to help you and make any alterations. A good professional (which most are!) will only sell you clubs to improve your game, so it will be money well spent.
Specialist Off-Course Golf Retailers
Specialist golf stores will offer a wide range of choice, often at discount prices. Check carefully though that the store has a good reputation for customer care. Beware of any store where an assistant is not knowledgeable enough to be able to answer any of your questions regarding what specification is best suited to your needs.
Internet
Offers some very cheap clubs if you know exactly what you want to buy.
Second-Hand Clubs
Used clubs will be cheap and often very good if you have a small budget. Advertisements can be found in local papers and many pro shops allow people to "trade in" their old set when buying new clubs. Be careful when buying used clubs. Look for wear on the clubfaces, pitting or rusting on the heads and shafts and ask if you can test them before buying. Used clubs can be a great bargain if they have been well looked after but you will not get a guarantee if anything goes wrong with them.
Considerations When Buying Clubs
1. Testing
Don't part with hundreds of pounds for a set of clubs before you even swing!
2. Adjustment
Determine if the retailer offers a "customising" service.
3. Shaft flexes available.
Is the retailer able to offer the clubs you want with different shafts, if required?
4. Warranty
Ensure the clubs are under a manufacturer's warranty. There are many things which can go wrong.
Accessories
The two most obvious items of golfing equipment, aside from a set of clubs and a bag to carry them in, are golf balls and shoes.
Golf Balls
Today's mid-range golf balls tend to be similar in quality and price. If you've just started playing, don't buy balls at 35.00 per dozen, just because Tiger Woods uses them. Decent quality balls can be bought for 10-12 per dozen. Balls are also designed to suit your swing speed. Golf balls with a "compression" of 90-95 suit most amateurs.
Shoes
If you intend to take golf anything like seriously, a good-quality, well fitting (waterproof!) pair of shoes is essential. These will not be cheap (100+), but the cost is offset by the fact that they last longer, fit better and are less likely to split / leak than cheaper shoes.
