The hair care market is constantly changing and frankly baffling, this is because the market is based on image and hype. The best way to get through this minefield is to simplify. If you want a shampoo, buy one that makes its first priority to clean your hair, other claims coming as a bonus.

HEALTHY HAIR
Like the skin or indeed your body, healthy hair is affected by your diet; your hair needs a balanced, nutritious diet to stay healthy:
  • Water:
Water makes up 25% of a strand of hair. Moisture makes the hair supple, so make sure you get plenty of fluids.
  • Protein:
Proteins are the "building blocks" of hair.
  • Minerals:
Iron helps to carry oxygen to the hair. Without enough iron, hair and its follicles get starved of oxygen. Zinc builds hair protein, which helps to prevent hair loss. Copper is involved in the pigmentation of hair. You can optimise your natural colour with a diet that has plenty of copper.
  • Vitamins:
Vitamin A will give you a healthy scalp, Vitamins B and C are important for good circulation, hair growth and hair colour. If you ensure that you have enough vitamin B and C, you'll have strong, supple hair.
  • Try a little scalp massage to increase blood-flow and stimulate hair growth.
  • Rinse your hair with cold water after showering, closing the follicles and lessening the chance of damage.
KEEPING HAIR HEALTHY
  • Avoid bleach, chlorine, permanent and semi-permanent colours.
  • Apply conditioner before you go swimming if the hair is already wet, thus minimising the absorption of salt and/or chlorine.
  • Physical wear: Friction produced by daily wear and tear is to blame for most hair damage. Even hair rubbing against a pillowcase can cause damage.
  • Don't brush wet hair too harshly, because it is three times weaker than when dry.
  • Avoid blow-drying. Intense heat is not good for the hair or scalp.
MEN'S SHAVERS

Shaver Styles
Two popular shavers are the "rotary head" and "foil" models. They come in a range of colours and styles with foil shavers quite easily fitting in a largish coat pocket, whilst some rotary models are possibly better suited to be left in one place.

Skin Types
Those with sensitive skin can look for relevant features. Some have built-in moisturizing cream that is applied to your face as you shave, some require you to apply the lotion before you shave and some come with a non-irritating foil.

Charging
All but the most basic rechargeable shavers include a gauge to show how much battery power is left. If you travel a lot, opt for one with automatic worldwide voltage, which means you can use your shaver on any 110-240 voltage AC systems. Remember on rechargeables that normal recharging time is quite slow varying from 1 hour to 16 hours with this giving roughly 45 minutes shaving time. Quick charging, taking 3 minutes, giving you one shave, is available on some models.

Trimmer
Virtually all models come with a pop up trimmer, which can be especially useful if you have a cheaper model and need to shave off a few days' stubble. Using just the ordinary shaving action, the shaver starts to struggle a bit. However, unlike with dedicated trimmers, these don't have a depth guide and so are neither that easy to use nor that accurate.

Maintenance
A shaver, which is used daily, is put to quite a bit of use. The parts will wear and need replacement. For rotary shavers, cutter and guards are sold together, whilst for foil models they can be purchased separately. Spare parts can be quite expensive, so check the guarantee before purchase. Most manufacturers offer a minimum one-year guarantee. If you don't want to be bothered cleaning out your shaver, buy a model with an automatic cleaning process. Battery life on rechargeables is another significant factor to bear in mind.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions on re-charging as too much charging may shorten the life of your shaver. Instructions on when to change heads and cutters vary between one or two years depending upon use. Some models are washable.

Safety
The debate as to which gives a better shave continues, though more men still prefer a wet to a dry shave. However, one of the attractions of the electric shaver is that it won't cut you: they're designed to maximize cutting of stubble at the same time as being safe. Whilst modern electrical shaver sockets are designed to cut out if there is an electrical short, electric safety practice still applies. Avoid putting your shaver near water, unless it's a washable model, in which case the transformer is in the plug.

Convenience
If you're buying an electric shaver because you want to avoid the hassle of a wet shave you will probably want to avoid those which offer lotion/moisturizing cream as you shave. The amount of noise shavers make differs quite considerably, so if you don't like a noisy shaving sound listen to it before you buy and get a quieter model.

HAIR REMOVAL
If it's hair on your chest you want to remove you can pretty much pick from all the methods that women have at their disposal. If it's your back, you may need professional help. Fortunately, most beauty salons now cater for both sexes, although this probably won't help you from feeling a little shy.

Depilatories
These include waxes sugars and razors. Razor is by far the easiest method but as they only remove the hair at the skins surface, the hair will grow back in a short time. Waxing and sugaring are a lot more time consuming and a little painful (although not as painful as women make out) they have longer lasting results because they rip the hair out at the roots.

Creams & Lotions
These are creams, which literally melt your hair away. They can be very effective, but don't agree with everybody, as the ingredients can be harsh. Some claim to make hairs grow back thinner. This is however very unlikely, your genes determining your hair texture.

Additionally, for removing nasal hair, hair from ears and trimming eyebrows, small, inexpensive tools are available, designed especially for these purposes. They are widely available in local chemists or online and are perfect for completing the well-groomed look.
