Planning a holiday can be very exciting. Holidays are special, they mean time out with your family or loved ones, a chance to experience a new place and culture and they're one of the things most of us work hard for all year! It is therefore important when planning your holiday to make sure everything is how you want it to be; it'll be a lot harder to change things when you're there; communication may be difficult if you're in a foreign country and you don't want silly mistakes eating into your precious holiday time. Hopefully there will be some useful advice here to help you choose the correct holiday accommodation.

Choosing holiday accommodation
When it comes to choosing where to stay on holiday there are now many possibilities to choose from. What you choose will be influenced by the type of holiday you want; with whom you are travelling; where you are travelling to; what your budget is; and - occasionally - how adventurous you are feeling!

Staying in a hotel
Staying in a good hotel can sometimes be an expensive option, but a luxurious one. Whilst staying in a hotel you may well be able to benefit from room service, together with a concierge to provide some local information and maybe even organise some tours for you. It can provide you with the security of having a good base where you know you'll be safe (and there is a greater chance of someone speaking English) whilst giving yourself the freedom to go out and explore.

To make your holiday even easier you could even opt to go half or full board or all inclusive at your hotel. Staying half board usually means your breakfast and either lunch or dinner is included in your room rate, full board gives you all meals, while all inclusive generally includes your drinks as well. These are excellent options if you're looking for a really relaxing time, you don't want to have to worry about anything, including where your next meal or cocktail comes from. However there are a few things to bear in mind. If you're a bit of a gourmet, then a full board or all-inclusive option may mean that you miss out on experiencing local foods and culture. If a hotel is predominantly filled with English guests then the food served may well be English or at least place a heavy English twist on things. Desirable for some. Not for others!

Some of the advantages of staying in a hotel include the facilities. There will usually be a pool and perhaps a private stretch of beach if you're close to the sea. There may also be a lifeguard on duty which would provide some peace of mind if you're a parent. The hotel also may have a gym and a spa along with kids clubs, babysitting services and an entertainment programme. Clearly, much depends upon your budget and the star rating of the hotel - check the brochure carefully and look for independent reviews online. If you are of more senior years, you may not want to spend the evenings on your balcony a mere two floors above a 2 kilowatt sound system belting out the hotel entertainer's version of Macarena at 2am in the morning!

Staying self catering
Staying self catering can make for an excellent holiday and with more and more people owning second homes and buy-to-let properties, you can find self catering accommodation pretty much anywhere. Self catering accommodation is also an excellent option if you're travelling in a large group. Many of the larger houses available for hire are a bit special and, although the weekly price tag may seem frightening, when filled to capacity they can be a very affordable option. There are many ways in which to book self catering accommodation, one of the best was to do it is by looking for owners advertising privately in newspapers or on the internet. It is now possible to find luxury villas with pools, remote and unusual villas, or even apartments in city centres in just about any location on the planet. Do bear in mind that contracts with private owners vary widely and need to be read with care. Accommodation booked through a major travel firm should be subject to clear standard terms and conditions.

Some villas and apartments are based within a resort or community and may have similar facilities to a hotel, with a shared communal pool and other facilities such as tennis courts and restaurants. This would be a good option if you'd like a self catering holiday but don't want to rent a car to get to local amenities. There are also properties available that are more remote and individual. This gives you the chance to really soak up the atmosphere and culture of the place you are visiting. You'll have to shop in the local supermarket and find your own way around places; it can all be a lot of fun.

Youth hostels and camping
These choices are usually reserved for younger travellers that are on a tighter budget. Youth hostels are an excellent option, especially if you'll only be staying in a place for a short time. The chances are you won't be in your room much as you'll be out and about so it doesn't really matter what it's like. They're also a good place to meet other people if you're travelling alone or in a smaller group. Camping is also a good cheap option, but do bear in mind what the weather is likely to do where you are staying, remember there is no central heating or air conditioning in a tent. It can be a lot of fun, but it can also be rather draining if you're not properly prepared.

Whatever your choice of accommodation, as with any purchase, be sure you read the small print, terms and conditions and spend some time looking through brochures and online to get the feel of the location and the accommodation on offer there.

Bon voyage!
