DIY is one of the UK's most popular activities. In the last ten years, spending on DIY projects has increased by approximately three-quarters, while spending on the employment of contractors has decreased by about a tenth in the same period.
BUYING DIY MATERIALS
DIY materials can be extremely expensive, but following a few simple guidelines can help to substantially reduce the outlay on DIY projects.
1. Budget
Deciding upon a realistic budget is an essential factor in the general scheme of DIY projects. Be certain to retain a small percentage of the budget to cover "unforeseen" costs, as many DIY projects often involve more work (and hence materials) than was envisaged at the outset. The absence of a budget often means that materials and money are exhausted, with the job only partially completed.
2. Planning
The cost of DIY materials (and hence the total project cost) can be decreased by correct planning of the job at the outset. Proper planning ensures that the materials purchased are only those that will be required, and in the appropriate quantities. Material costs are the most significant part of the overall outlay on a project and careful planning can prevent the purchase of unnecessary materials, thus helping the project to stay within the allotted budget.
3. Quality of Materials
As with so many purchases, DIY materials follow the general rule of "you get what you pay for." Quality materials are usually relatively expensive, while cheap materials are generally poor quality. Within reason, it makes practical and economic sense to buy the best quality materials that you budget will allow. Better quality materials are easier to work with and will outlast cheaper alternatives. However, this does not mean twenty-four carat gold bathroom fixtures and fittings, or imported marble worktops for the kitchen. Simply ensure that materials are the best available within the budget, to ensure that the finished job is as planned.
WHERE TO BUY
DIY Centres
Numerous DIY centres will be able to provide inexpensive, quality supplies. Whilst you may have a long-standing favourite, online reviews are worth reading to check up on discounts, the most suitable supplies for your job and customer service standards. While buying your entire requirements form one source is convenient, if time allows, savings can be made by exploring various outlets.
Buying Online
Buying online may be convenient, but this may be offset by the delivery time, making a trip to the local DIY store much quicker. If there is a DIY warehouse nearby, delivery can be relatively fast. Otherwise, it may take several days for orders to be processed and despatched. Don't be taken in by websites making false claims to be discount home improvement stores, and compare prices before parting with cash.
Surplus Materials
House builders are able to buy cheap materials because of discounts available for bulk purchases. Such discounts are not available on purchases of small quantities for DIY projects. However, it is now possible for DIYers to make their budget go further by buying surplus materials online. It is possible to buy surplus and end of line materials, at big discounts, from builders across the UK. Visitors to these sites can:
1. Purchase smaller quantities of building materials usually sold in bulk.
2. Negotiate individual sale terms.
3. Find suitable products locally.
4. Watch for price reductions and new offers.
5. Enjoy anonymity to examine materials, technical specifications and sizes before contacting the seller.
Due to an increasing shortage of landfill space, the building industry is under increasing pressure from the Government to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner and adopt recycling waste procedures. The construction industry highlights the fact that over one-fifth of "waste" materials on any given site can usually be salvaged and recycled. Government sources estimate that if the top two thousand contracting firms sold half of their recyclable "waste," this would generate revenue in excess of 100 million. Online sites offering surplus / end of line materials provide a platform for builders to recycle surplus materials, while reducing disposal costs and generating additional revenue
