It might sound preposterous to many people, but the best way to evaluate the security status of your house is to view it as if you were a burglar. Try not to feel shocked at the thought, just imagine how you would have tried to gain entry to your house with all the doors and windows securely locked and bolted. If you can actually find a way in then it would be prudent to re-think your security.

There might be a few insecure windows and a door which could be ideal for them to sneak in. So, it may be time for you to seriously think about installing alarms, locks, a CCTV system or infra red sensors.

Alarms
There are many sophisticated alarms which can be installed in doors and windows to warn you of unauthorised entry. Many models do not require elaborate wiring since they are equipped with wireless connectivity.

Some top end models are also capable of storing a pre-recorded message and are equipped with built-in telephone dialler. Here, the moment the sensor detects any abnormal movements, the device automatically sends the pre-recorded message to pre-designated numbers (up to four such numbers can be stored). In some select models, a siren is simultaneously activated.

Most models also have the option of a remote panic button. If you feel somebody has sneaked in to your house and the alarm has failed to detect it, you can manually activate the alarm by pressing the panic button.

Not all alarms need to have so many features. A model with only a siren can perhaps be installed in the garage or shed, to warn not only the occupants of the house but also the entire neighbourhood, of any unusual activity nearby.

Some families are very innovative. They use such alarms to announce the arrival of guests. Obviously these alarms don't have sirens which rattle the entire neighbourhood or have auto-diallers which bring the police rushing to the spot. They just alert you that someone has arrived. Then, with the help of a CCTV system, you can even see who has come to visit!

Keypad Locks
Instead of conventional locks a magnetic keypad lock can also be installed in the main door. These locks are almost totally tamper proof and the only way a burglar can gain entry is by breaking open the door. That can't usually be achieved without attracting the attention of the neighbours. So, if an electronic lock is fitted to your main door you can generally consider it sufficiently 'burglar proof' -- but you should ensure that your insurance company also regards it as sufficient. Some of these locks have in-built remote warning systems which are activated if there is any attempt to tamper with them.

Any of the above does not in any way make the sturdy padlock obsolete. Padlocks are still a favourite in many households and not matter how sophisticated electronic security systems may be, a sturdy, multi-levered, case hardened, steel shackled padlock on shed doors and other outbuildings would be wise.

CCTV Systems
High resolution cameras are now available at really affordable prices. The basic CCTV systems require wiring but if you are willing to spend a little more, wireless connectivity is also available.

Wireless cameras need only to be connected to a power source without any wires for further connection to a recording unit. The images taken by the cameras can be transmitted typically some 100 metres and the receiver generally needs to be plugged in to a TV monitor for display. These are very easy to install.

Most CCTV cameras have night vision capabilities and some are equipped with microphones thus making them capable of audio monitoring too. They generally have strong alloy shells and are housed in weather proof casings for outdoor installation.

Infra red Sensors
You may attach infra red sensors to the lights on your drive or main gate, or perhaps to lights around the outside of the house. These sensors are made in such a way that they switch on the lights for a selected period when they sense some movement within their range. These devices come in handy in the night when all lights are switched off. Imagine an intruder stealthily approaching your house, secure in the belief that the cover of darkness will prevent his movements from being monitored, suddenly getting drenched in bright light! This should be enough to deter many burglars,

Security when You are Away
There are certain devices which create an impression that someone is in the house, which will help in deterring thieves. These devices come in handy when you are on a holiday or away on business leaving the house empty. You can use timer switches to turn on the lights of the house to create an impression that there are people inside. You should also consider using 'safe' cans or 'safe' books or any similar 'safe' containers to store your valuables and important documents. This is an additional security measure to protect costly and important items should you get some unwanted 'guests' during your absence.

There are of course some other practical measures you should take when planning a trip: you should also never discuss your travel plans in a public place or with people you don't really know that well - you never know who may be listening; your luggage should have your home address as a friend of family member's, not your own; you should ask a neighbour to keep an eye out for newspapers, post or parcels left at the door as these are all classic signs of an empty home. Low tech but effective!

Conclusion
There are many sophisticated devices available to keep your house secure from burglars. Whether you choose alarms, CCTV, master locks, sensors or any combination of these, they will give you peace of mind knowing that you have made the burglars' job as difficult as possible. You should also follow sensible practical measures when planning a trip away and remain vigilant without becoming obsessed. Despite the impression created by the media, serious crime is still mercifully a rare occurrence in most parts of the UK.
