Honda produces a variety of motorised vehicles ranging from cars and motorcycles to robots and water crafts. They are the world's top engine manufacturer and the fifth largest car manufacturer, with a reputation for reliability that has held strong since 1948.

A Brief History of Honda
Honda was founded in its modern form in 1948 after virtually total destruction by bombing during the Second World War. Initially it concentrated on cheap motorcycles for a recovering Japanese population but during the 1960s it turned its attention to cars and the global market. Its real breakthrough came with the 1972 Civic, which appealed to the American market due to its low fuel consumption rates and cheap price. Since then Honda has gone from strength to strength, achieving great success in motor sports (including Formula 1) and regularly being voted number 1 car manufacturer in the world for its quality and style.

2008 UK Honda Models
  • Accord: In competition with the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Vectra, this is the 5-door all rounder of the Honda range. The design, build and drive quality are all excellent but they come at a higher price than most of its rivals. The 2.2 litre turbo diesel gives the best performance, but the 2.0 and 2.4 litre petrol models are also good. If you want a reliable family car with all the latest features, you need look no further. It is also available as an Estate.
  • CR-V: This is an affordable, comfortable and reliable SUV. It even manages to exhibit some environmental awareness through reasonable fuel economy and emissions ratings. Most users report a very satisfactory build quality, with a spacious and stylish interior. It is available with a smooth running 2.0 litre petrol engine or a powerful 2.2 litre turbo diesel.
  • Civic: Honda's most versatile car is available in 3-door, 5-door, Hybrid and 'Type R' specifications. Redesigned in 2006, this hatchback is attractive, well built and superb on the road. The 5-door will give you enough room to take the whole family comfortably, the hybrid is environmentally friendly and cheap to run, and the Type R is powerful and sporty. It is down to the individual to decide which model and which engine size they require.
  • FR-V: For once, a car manufacturer has managed to make a good looking people carrier. The 5-door Honda FR-V will not make you look stupid and does not compromise on performance. While the 1.7 and 2.0 litre petrol engines are fairly good, the 2.2 litre turbo diesel provides a quality of acceleration that other MPVs simply do not offer. In addition, its safety features are top notch.
  • Jazz: This 5-door supermini is Honda's most successful small car. It is attractive, spacious and performs well in both the 1.2 and 1.4 litre petrol models. As an added bonus, its fuel economy almost matches that of diesel cars. Perfect for a family on a budget.
  • Legend: A 5-door executive saloon available with a 3.5 litre petrol engine only. Although not as attractive as its competitors in this class (Mercedes, BMW, Audi) it manages to match them on performance and features. It also costs a fraction of the price and promises far greater reliability with cheaper servicing costs.
  • S2000: Released to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary, the 3-door S2000 was designed with performance and style in mind while also trying to uphold Honda's immaculate reputation for reliability. It has an electric soft top allowing you to switch easily between convertible and standard mode, and even manages to include a fairly roomy boot. Its 2 litre turbo charged engine has won engine of the year every year since its launch and provides blistering acceleration (0-62mph in 6.2 seconds) and a top speed of 150mph. As an added bonus, at under 30,000 when bought new it is one of the cheapest 'sports' cars out there.

  • Getting the Right Honda
Do you need cheap and practical family car? Or do you want an extravagant and fast two-seater? There are many questions to consider when buying a Honda for the first time. Check the car summaries above and some online reviews to see which car best suits your needs. Try to take fuel economy into account as this could save you money in the long term. However, Hondas are generally cheap to run and service so you do not need to worry too much.

    Second Hand Hondas
The great thing about Hondas is that they hold their value well. So if you are selling your Honda, you are likely to get a good price for it. On the other hand, if you are buying one then you do not need to worry about it rapidly depreciating in value.

Hondas are also known to be extremely reliable and serviceable. As a result even a second hand car will last for ages and will not break the bank if it does need repairing. Even so, it is important not to be nave when searching for a second hand Honda. Most sellers are trustworthy but be wary of cars that might have been stolen or previously written off. If you are unsure, get the car checked over by a professional.

Finally make sure you test drive the car to ensure that you are satisfied before buying.
