The equipment and accessories sector for horse riders and trekkers is huge -- there are innumerable products available to buy. In general terms equipment and accessories will fall into two categories -- those for a rider and those for the horse. People will have varying needs here -- if somebody owns their own horse then they will obviously need to have more kit. People who simply ride at a stables, however, may find that they only need to sort out themselves as the stables will take care of the horses.

Equipment and accessories for riders
The primary consideration first of all is who the rider is. Any equipment and accessories purchased need to meet the needs, age and experience of the rider. So, for example, a young child that is learning to ride will have different needs to an experienced rider. From a safety perspective it is vital to buy the right equipment and accessories for any age. A hard hat / safety hat must precisely fit the rider or they could cause themselves serious injury in a fall, for example.

The first thing to consider here is thus safety for the rider. So, the hard hat / safety helmet is absolutely essential. It doesn't matter how experienced the rider is -- if an accident happens and they are thrown from the horse then they run the risk of a serious if not life threatening head injury. So, buy head protection that fits and that has been passed as suitable from a safety perspective. Think about buying a hat bag to keep the headwear in good condition.

Other options here -- which are particularly useful with young riders or inexperienced ones -- are body protectors and reflective clothing. Clothing is also generally important. Most riders will have boots, jodhpurs and maybe even breeches. If competing then competition jackets, whips, spurs, tie-pins / stock-pins and hair nets (for the girls generally!) may also be an requirement. If trekking or riding outdoors in winter then general warm clothing including scarves and gloves are also a good thing to have!

Equipment and accessories for horses
It is also important to take time to think about what equipment and accessories to buy if you own a horse. The obvious pieces of equipment to have include: saddles; bits; bridles; reins; girths; and, stirrups. It is important for both the horse and rider to make sure that the equipment purchased here is suitable for both the animal and the person. Buying the wrong kind of equipment for a horse can cause discomfort and distress and could lead to accidents. Accessories that might be useful include training equipment, martingales and breastplates, covers for saddles and lunging equipment -- purchases here will really depend on what the rider wants to do with the horse.

Finally, don't forget about horse care. A rug is always a good buy and the horse will need some form of grooming and health / maintenance kit. Some people may need to buy specialist fencing and will also need to think about mucking out -- so, a bucket and spade are more or less essential!

Safety and quality are major considerations whether buying equipment and accessories for a horse or for a rider. Both the horse and the rider need adequate protection at all times. Falls and throws can cause serious injury so it is wise to be as protected as possible. Parents, in particular, should make sure that their children ride to their abilities and that they ride responsibly and under supervision as necessary.

As with many sectors getting good quality equipment and accessories could save money in the long run even if the cost a little more to start with. Buying a good brand will simply help improve safety and will ensure that the equipment and accessories last for a long time -- cheaper products may need replacing quite quickly which could work out even more expensive in the long term. Check out Internet forums if you are unsure of good brands / products to find out the experiences of other riders. It is always useful to find out manufacturers that they rate -- and doubly useful to find out ones that they don't!

Buying horse riding and trekking equipment and accessories second hand
It's quite common to see equipment and accessories on sale second hand for both horses and riders. This is probably due to the fact that many items here cost a fair amount of money so it makes sense for owners to try and get some of the money back when they replace items.

If making a second hand purchase online then take a little time to assess the equipment or accessory to check its quality and condition. There are many valid reasons for selling this kind of kit second hand so look out for them. For example, a parent may be selling a saddle that their child has outgrown or an adult rider may have upgraded their saddle so may be selling their old one. Or, someone may simply be selling off an unwanted or duplicate gift.

Bear in mind that buying second hand head gear needs extra attention here and is not always recommended. Check to see if the headwear was ever involved in an accident -- if it was then it may not give adequate protection any more. In general terms always ask a lot of questions about the condition of the equipment or accessories. Ask if there is any damage, if the item has ever been repaired and if it comes complete with all necessary attachments and so on. Ask if there is a problem with the equipment or accessory -- most people will be honest if asked a specific question like this. Finally, if possible try to view pictures of any item before buying as this will give a useful visual check.
