There are many options when you're buying books and magazines in the humour, comedy and fun sections of a book shop. Some people simply buy humorous books that catch their eye, some specifically look to buy comedy books and magazines in general and others like to buy books and magazines that are tied into their favourite comedy shows, films and TV series. And, of course, this sector is a popular one with collectors who may collect generally in this area or who may specialise in collecting specific types of humour, comedy and fun books and magazines.

Popular types of humour, comedy and fun books and magazines
Some people, for example simply like to read humorous fiction in general whilst others will buy books and magazines that are tied into their favourite comedy characters or shows. So, for example, a teenager may buy Simpsons books and comics, his mother may read light-hearted 'chick-lit' novels and his father might like reading Monty Python books.

Most popular comedy TV shows from past and present decades will have some kind of tie-in in the book and / or magazine sectors. Some magazines will be issued on a regular basis (i.e. weekly or monthly) whilst others are only published periodically. Book options here vary -- it's possible, for example, to buy factual books about comedy series and script books.

A lot of people also like to buy and read fun cartoon publications. Cartoon series such as The Simpsons are obviously well represented but there are genres here for all ages. Many classic types of books and magazines here can be enjoyed by all the family -- examples include Garfield and Snoopy. Do bear in mind, however, when looking at comic strips, that many are designed for adult humour and are not always suitable for children - South Park comes to mind!

Considerations when buying humour, comedy and fun books and magazines
The main consideration for many people buying books in these sectors -- whether they are collectors or they simply want to read and enjoy the book or magazine -- is cost. Two identical books from two identical shops or sellers will beidentical and the only thing that shows a difference between them is the cost charged. So, there's no point paying more than you have to for humour, comedy and fun books and magazines as shopping around could get you a bargain or at the very least a discount.

People tend to either buy their books from a high street store or via the Internet. Some shop online on auction sites where they buy from other individuals or small businesses and some will use major e-tailers or the web sites of major high street names. Buying here is generally all down to personal preference. For example, some like to be able to go into a shop and buy a book straight away whilst others really don't mind shopping online and having to wait for it to be delivered.

Buying humour, comedy and fun books and magazines second hand
If you buy humour, comedy and fun books and magazines second hand in one of the, sadly, dwindling number of second hand bookshops, then you simply need to check that the book or magazine is in a suitable condition for your needs. Some people prefer to buy books that are in an almost perfect or 'As New' condition when buying second hand whilst others don't mind if the cover is tatty or torn and the book appears to have 'lived a little' as they are only interested in reading the contents and don't plan on keeping the book forever in any case.!

If you are collecting humour, comedy and fun books and magazines then it is obviously more important to make a check on quality and condition as this could affect the future resale value of the book. Sometimes finding an extremely rare book or magazine here that is in quite a tatty condition won't have an adverse effect on the value -- if the book or magazine is rare enough. But, in most cases, condition and quality are key considerations for collectors.

If you're looking to buy humour, comedy and fun books and magazines second hand over the Internet then you won't have the luxury of actually seeing the item before you buy it. One way round this is to ask to see a digital photo of the book or magazine which will at least give you an indication as to what state it is in. Ask the seller specific questions about the item -- for example, are there any tears, are any pages missing or has anyone written inside the book?

Most sellers will be quite honest about quality and condition. In many cases people will simply be selling off books that they don't want or like any more or that they were given as an unwanted gift. Others may simply periodically sell off their books to free up more space around the house.

Perhaps in the comedy genre, more than any other, do be aware of age appropriateness if buying a book as a gift for a child or teenager. Whereas horror and fiction titles generally give fairly clear warning signs as to adult content, even from a quick scan of the summary on the jacket cover, this is less intuitive in comedy books. A garish comic or annual, or a stand-up comedian's hardback may look funny and innocent enough but much of the humour may have a distinctly adult flavour. Be certain that you are familiar enough with the writer or comic in question and remember that what you see on the TV from a comic will often have been dramatically toned down in contrast with their live performances -- as anyone who has seen Jim Davidson live at the Circus Tavern will attest!
