Hunting and archery equipment can be very expensive. Buying the correct types of equipment can be achieved without leaving a big whole in your wallet, and will help to increase your aptitude and enjoyment of these pastimes.

BUYING HUNTING EQUIPMENT

The purchase of hunting equipment can be a complicated process. There is a vast and bewildering range of equipment available at sporting goods stores and on Internet websites. Different hunters have different needs, so the same equipment / accessories will not be appropriate to everyone. Over a period, any hunter is likely to accumulate their own individual assortment of equipment, accessories and gadgets.

Where to Buy Hunting Equipment and Accessories
Specialist sporting goods outlets will offer a wider choice of superior quality equipment that is not available elsewhere. However, goods from this source tend to be expensive, so they are fine if your budget is unlimited. For those to whom finance is an issue, the Internet may prove a valuable resource. There are many websites offering all sorts of hunting gear, both new and second-hand, at very competitive prices. Although it is not possible to try the goods before purchase, many sites offer in-depth reviews of the majority of their products.

What and Where to Buy
The Internet also offers any number of hunting "forum" sites, which are a great source of information and advice. The candid opinions of others in the hunting fraternity can assist you by advising what not to buy, as well as the sites and products that are worthy of consideration.

Hunting Rifles
Anyone contemplating hunting small game should be aware that a hunting rifle must be sufficiently accurate to shoot a rabbit in the head from at least eighty yards. The required accuracy is similar to that of a target rifle and a telescopic sight should be used to make the most efficient use of the weapon's accuracy. Whilst a high quality target rifle has excellent accuracy, it will not be suited for use "in the field." A hunting rifle should be comparatively lightweight. The most adaptable positions for shooting are standing and sitting. The sitting position is best, as it allows for a level of accuracy approaching the prone position, far better than standing or kneeling. .22 calibre rifles are appropriate for the hunting of small game. Since small game animals generally need to be shot while they are running, it is recommended that some type of repeating rifle be used. High velocity, hollow point ammunition will ensure a clean kill. There are various types of rifle available, including autoloading and pump action. The weapon selected is very much a matter of personal preference and budget.

BUYING ARCHERY EQUIPMENT
Advances in technology have seen drastic changes to archery equipment. Bows that were formerly of solely wooden construction are now available in combinations of wood, carbon fibre and fibreglass, with bowstrings of a hydrocarbon material. Arrows are now constructed of carbon / aluminium shafts with steel heads, and can be propelled at speeds of up to 150 m.p.h. It is essential for every archer to understand their skill level and the type of equipment and accessories they require. The following attempts to give an insight into the types of archery equipment available. The appropriate equipment is dependent on the branch of the sport in which you wish to partake.

Target Archery
Target Archery requires the archer to shoot (not fire!) a specific number of arrows at set targets.

Field Archery
In Field Archery, archers shoot different types of arrows at a variety of targets at different distances located around a course. This type of archery seems to be particularly attractive, since it offers a "virtual hunting" scenario, without killing animals.

Bows
The consensus amongst experts is that a light compound starter bow is appropriate for beginners. Such bows consist of an alloy handle with limbs made from fibreglass. They are often marketed in "starter" sets, consisting of the bow, a pinsight (an aiming device), armguard, several arrows and a belt quiver. Such sets are available for as little as 50.
A suitable alternative might be a more substantial adult recurve bow. The draw weight of these bows is about thirty pounds, so be certain you are strong enough to pull it comfortably. A recurve bow, complete with pinsight can be found for 70 or so.

Arrows
Arrows are available in a number of diameters, up to a maximum of 9.3mm. They can be distinguished by marking with the competitor's initials or distinguishing patterns on the arrow feathers (fletching). Several different types of arrows are available, the cheapest being wood at about 1.50 each, progressing to fibreglass at about 3 and various types of aluminium, all priced at around the 6 mark. "Nocks" are the attachment on the rear of an arrow that holds it in place on the bowstring.

Miscellaneous Archery Equipment

Chest Guards
These are made of plastic or leather and keep clothing out of the way and protect the body from the bowstring at release.

Finger Tabs / Shooting Gloves
Finger tabs or shooting gloves (a flat piece of leather) are worn as a guard to protect the finger on the release of an arrow.

Targets
Targets are 1.22m in diameter, with the centre (gold, never bull's eye!) standing 1.3m from the ground. The centre is 12.2cm in diameter. Prices vary, dependent on quality.

Buying Online
Purchasing archery equipment and accessories from the Internet can result in some excellent deals. Exclusive online prices and product advice are available.

Safety Considerations
1. Never point a firearm or bow at anything you do not intend to shoot. Keep your finger out of the trigger guard until the instant you are ready to fire. Always keep the safety on until ready to fire.

2. Every time you pick up a firearm, check to see if it is loaded. Be sure the chamber and magazine are empty and that the action is open until ready to be fired.

3. Be sure of your target and what is in front of and beyond it. Since you do not know what is on the other side, never shoot at animals on ridges or hillsides. Be aware of how far projectiles can travel.

4. Unload firearms and unstring conventional bows when not in use. Leave actions open, and store sporting arms in cases when travelling. Store and transport firearms and ammunition separately.

5. Handle firearms, arrows and ammunition carefully. Avoid horseplay. Never climb with a loaded firearm or bow and arrows. Carry arrows in a protected cover or quiver.

6. The safe "firing zone" is that area or direction in which you can safely fire a shot. Be sure you know where your companions are at all times. Never swing your gun or bow out of your safe firing zone. When hunting, wear daylight fluorescent orange so you can be seen from a distance or in heavy cover.

7. Control your emotions. The excitement of hitting a target or animal may cause you to turn a loaded gun on your companions, or run towards a downed animal with the safety off. Be disciplined!

8. Don't drink alcohol or take drugs before handling firearms or bow and arrows.
