If you have been searching for a job, but havent received any offers, you will no doubt feel discouraged. Dont panic or give up. You can find a job. A good job. Whether you have just started your search or it needs a boost, you need to prepare carefully.

Preparing your Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Before you begin your job search, its important to prepare. Have your Curriculum Vitae (CV) well-written and neatly printed on good-quality paper in black ink. Be sure it is put together in a professional manner. Never handwrite a CV. Your CV sells you to prospective employers before they ever meet you.

Be sure your CV lists your name, address, telephone numbers, email address, and any other pertinent information. Many also list a goal near the beginning stating job titles in which the applicant is interested. Dont apply to all jobs; determine which ones you are qualified for and most interested in.

Your CV should have your educational background, including schools and colleges attended, dates, areas of study, and any professional qualifications and accreditations. Be sure the dates are correct and indicate if you have copies of your certificates available.

Your CV should list your employment background, including job titles, dates of employment, names of employers, and their addresses and phone numbers. Indicate if you have letters of recommendation available.

Your CV should have no spelling, punctuation, or grammar errors. Have it proofread several times by someone else.

Follow any instructions given by a potential employer regarding the CV. Also indicate whether you have each specification and requirement for each job for which you are applying. If you lack a requirement, try to indicate other skills you have that may be relevant in meeting the requirements of the role.

Indicate that you are willing to learn, a rapid learner, and that you have a strong desire to work for the particular company to which you are applying. Other qualities you might want to mention include honesty, civic responsibility (with an example or two), responsibility, a willingness to work very hard, and a willingness to relocate. Remember that any covering letter may well be separated from your CV so ensure that the CV itself includes all pertinent information.

The Job Search
Step 1 Evaluate your Action Plan
Determine why you are not receiving job offers. Here are some things to consider.

Make sure your CV presents you well, as above.

Be sure that you are ready to present yourself at interviews. Get a flattering haircut, wear a professional looking suit or other appropriate attire (depending upon the role in question) and polished shoes. If you feel good about yourself, this will come across to the interviewer.

Think about whether you are applying for jobs for which you are appropriately qualified. If not, consider applying for jobs for which you have the right credentials. Perhaps some changes to your CV will help employers view your education and experience in a different light, one that showcases talents for which they are searching. Or, consider taking a lower level job to learn the ropes and then move on up, using contacts you have made.

Is the competition overwhelming? If so, perhaps, you should consider other career paths or again consider taking a lower level job to get a foot in the door.

Consider using a job placement agency or employment agency to assist you in finding job possibilities. In doing so, apply the same professional approach to your CV and interview technique with the agency. If they dont feel they can take you seriously, they will assume a potential employer will have the same impression and you will miss out.

Step 2 Applications
Fill out each job application carefully, addressing each requirement specifically and including all information requested. Make sure it is accurate!

Make it clear on each application as to why you are an excellent person to hire. What will you bring to the company that makes you valuable to it?

Application Formats
Be sure to apply in the format required. For example, in many Civil Service applications, the process is highly structured and the application form is the only way to apply.

Step 3 Interviews and Follow-ups
When (yes when not if!) you are invited to and scheduled for an interview, give yourself plenty of time for travel. Be sure to arrive on time. If you smoke or had a curry last night, invest in some mints or breath fresheners. Bring your CV and any other documents you might need. Stay calm. Be polite. Smile. Shake hands and dont sit down until you are invited. The more you interview, the easier it will become. Act in a warm, friendly but serious manner, listening attentively throughout the interview. Answer the questions you are asked. Always be positive and polite (even if asked about past roles where the outcome has been less than positive!). Dont lie an experienced interviewer can usually spot this. Just focus on the positive things in each role and experience.

After the interview, send a polite note to thank the person who interviewed you and restate your interest in the job and your hope that you will hear from the company soon.

Conclusion
Following the above suggestions should help in getting your job search moving along quickly. It may still take some time to find the right job. In the meantime, keep busy with part-time or volunteer work (all the while recording this on your CV it is all experience and shows that you are someone who takes control of their own destiny). Dont be embarrassed to ask family and friends for moral support weve all been there! Keep researching classifieds.co.uk, the internet at large, trade publications, agencies, newspapers and so on.

There is an employer out there desperate for you.
