Lexus, a division of Toyota Motors, is a world leader in the design, development and production of luxury motor vehicles. The company was initiated in 1983, and has continued according to its slogan "The Passionate Pursuit of Perfection" right up to the present day. Lexus has won many industry awards for the quality, and reliability, of its vehicles, and regularly ranks highly in customer satisfaction surveys, such as those conducted by "Top Gear", and "Auto Express".

About Lexus
Lexus' first production model, the LS400 was unveiled in the United States, in 1989, and its first luxury, performance car, the GS 300 appeared four years later, in 1993. Lexus won numerous industry, and customer satisfaction awards for both cars, and was ranked first for vehicle dependability the fewest problems in 5 years of ownership by J.D. Power, in 1995, 1996 and 1997. 1997 also saw the addition of a more powerful GS model, the V8, GS 400, to the Lexus range. The release of the RX 300 in 2000, along with the more powerful LX 470, further expanded the range. The Lexus LX450, another luxury SUV, or "Sports Utility Vehicle", was first introduced in 2006, and after just 2 months of production supplanted Land Rover as the leading luxury SUV, in terms of units sold.

Lexus Models
Despite of maybe even because of the connection of Lexus with Alan "Lexus is the Japanese Mercedes" Partridge, the Lexus IS saloon is popular with younger buyers, and does have a reputation for reliability. The IS first appeared, as a 2.0 litre, fuel injection, version, and this was supplemented in 2001, by a 3.0 litre version, developing 211bhp. The 3.0 litre version does 0 to 60 mph in just over 8 seconds.

The 4.3 litre, V8, GS430 is a much more powerful and, indeed, expensive, at over 46,000, new beast, altogether, developing 279bhp, and delivering impressive thrust in the middle rpm range. The GS430 is equipped, for instance, with radio controlled cruise control, and provides a very quiet, smooth ride, even at high speeds, courtesy of its six-speed automatic gearbox. It has been criticised, in some quarters, however, as being nothing more than a Mercedes clone, without the panache of Mercedes.

At a slightly lower level, in terms of engine capacity, and price although still just over 35,000, new the GS300SE, a 3.0 litre, 245bhp model, is equipped with luxurious extras, such as a leather interior and satellite navigation, which help it to retain its value. Its performance is adequate, to say the least, with a top speed of nearly 150 mph, and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in a little over 7 seconds, but while its handling, and balance, are also of high order, its ride quality lacks that of some other luxury cars, and its six-speed gearbox is not altogether responsive.

The slight more up market, GS300 SE-L, includes a Mark Levinson stereo, a sunroof, and 18 inch alloy wheels, although it could be argued that the stereo in the standard GS300 which, itself, has 10 speakers is more than adequate, the sunroof reduces headroom, particularly for taller drivers, and that the alloy wheels do not make for a comfortable ride at lower speeds, where the car is "fidgety". The 3.5 litre, V6, petrol engine generally performs smoothly, and fuel consumption is in the region of 25 to 30mpg, on average. The GS300 SE-L is spacious enough to accommodate four adults, in comfort, but loading there luggage may be a different story altogether; the opening to the loading space in the boot is very narrow, so that loading large objects, or those that are of an irregular shape, can become a frustrating exercise.

Buying a Used Lexus
Lexus, on the whole, has a reputation for reliability, longevity and its cars generally hold their value very well. As such, the purchase of a used Lexus can represent a solid investment, while allowing you to own a "luxury" car which may, on a superficial level, project an image of you, as a car owner at an affordable price. A car that is less than 10 years old, and has done relatively low mileage say, less than 100,000 miles is probably the best bet. Indeed, there is, in fact, a used car programme approved by Lexus, itself, for which qualifying vehicles must have covered less than 140,000 miles, and be less than 7 years old. The programme also demands that a full service history is present, and that a vehicle has no outstanding finance, and has not been "written off", due to a previous accident. Wherever you are intending to purchase a used Lexus, these are things that you should investigate very carefully. Make sure, too, that all appropriate documentation for instance, the V5 registration document is present, and correct.
