Many people are interested in books and magazines that give them information on their local area. They may like to learn more about the village, town or city in which they live or they may simply want to find out more about their local region and places of interest -- the old mill down the road or the local nature reserve. For this reason there are a lot of books and magazines that handle local interest subjects available to buy in almost any book shop.
An introduction to local interest books and magazines
In most areas there will probably be more books than magazines although you may find that local interest groups in some areas may publish regular (i.e. monthly or quarterly) magazines to which you can either subscribe or which you can buy in your local book shop.
If you are looking for local interest publications then you will generally have a fair degree of choice. Many people, for example, will buy local interest map books, geography, natural history or walking guides so that they can learn more about the area in the context of walks, hikes and trips out. There are often publications on local wildlife and bird activity; fishing; agricultural history, architecture and related themes. When buying local interest books and magazines new rather than second hand, you will need to think about where you can get hold of the copies or issues that you want to buy. Although most high street chain book shops will have a local history or local interest section you may well find that you get a better selection of available books in an independent local book shop or that you need to hunt around.

Buying over the Internet may actually be the cheapest way to get hold of local interest books and magazines as many sites will offer online discounts. Of course, if you order from your local book shop you can also arrange to have the book delivered to the store or direct to your home if that is more convenient.
Although book sellers will often discount their books in store as well these discounts may not always apply to local interest books and magazines which are generally held to be targeted at a niche market. That said, you should be able to find a discounted price somewhere if you shop around -- unless the book is rare or particularly specialised.

Collectors -- both amateur and serious -- may well buy local interest books and magazines second hand. They may, for example, enjoy collecting historical books and magazines or they may be desperate to get hold of an out of print book. In some cases they simply want to buy a book or magazine more cost effectively and buying it second hand allows them to do so.
Issues such as quality may matter to collectors more than most as the books or magazines they seek may be valuable. Here a good quality copy or issue is a major consideration for them to make as it could affect value. This is an easy thing to check in a second hand book store but you may need to proceed with a little more care if you are buying second hand local interest books and magazines over the Internet.
The easiest way to see the condition or quality of a local interest book or magazine that you are buying online is to ask the seller to take a digital photo of it so that you can take a look at it. Most will be happy to do this and will also answer any questions you have about the book or magazine. Questions you can ask here should include the following. Is there any damage to the cover or inside pages?; Has anyone written inside the book or magazine?; Are all the pages intact and complete?; Why are you selling it? You'll find that most sellers will be happy to give you the information you need to assess whether buying a particular local interest book and magazine is worth your while.
