There have probably never been so many magazines and journals available to consumers as can be found on the shelves today. There are magazines and journals available for men, women and for children and they can cover just about any subject from TV gossip, to hobbies through to new movements in nuclear physics or advances in brain surgery!

People buy magazines and journals for different reasons. Some people simply like to read a chatty magazine, for example, some will need to read journals associated with their profession and others may actually collect either new or old copies here as a hobby or as part of their job as a dealer or collector.

Types of magazines and journals
There is probably a magazine or journal out there for every kind of hobby, business sector, leisure interest, scientific field and research specialism that the average person can think of. Some magazines are issued weekly, some fortnightly or monthly and some only come out once a quarter or on an ad hoc basis. Some people buy a copy of their favourite magazine or journal every issue, some subscribe annually to have it delivered to their home and some merely buy an issue that looks interesting.

Avid magazine and journal fans will try and move heaven and earth if they miss an issue of their favourite title. This has led to a fairly buoyant market in the sale of recent editions of magazines and journals (usually online). The emphasis here is often on magazine series that are held to be collectible such as children's TV tie-ins and craft magazines that allow the reader to complete part of a task with every issue.

Many people simply buy a magazine to read for leisure purposes. Many women, for example, like to read weekly fashion or chat magazines. Music fans may like to read music magazines and book lovers can read magazines full of book reviews. Some people actually use magazines or journals to help them with a leisure interest or hobby. A magazine devoted to dolls houses, for example, could help a collector buy and sell new items and learn more about their specialist area.

Many magazines and journals also have a business bias. Some sectors, such as IT and PR, for example, will have two or three magazines and various journals available for people in the industry. These kinds of magazines and journals will be focused on the industry sector. So, for example, they may give information on new developments, industry changes and news. They may be also used as a source of jobs when job hunting.

Certain types of commercial, scientific and business journals may differ slightly from magazines in that they may only be published every now and then or at infrequent but regular intervals. In some cases these journals will not be available for sale to general consumers but will be sent out on a subscription or qualification basis. These journals may well simply contain information on new advances or experiments in certain fields. Obviously, these will tend to be read by people that work in a relevant sector.

Many collectors and dealers nowadays work in the magazine and journals sector. Some may buy up copies of modern magazines, for example, in the hope that they will rise in collectible value. Others prefer to buy old copies of magazines and journals. Some collectors here may only collect one magazine with the aim of tracking down every single issue, some may only collect Victorian magazines and some may only collect medical journals from the 1920s forward. In many cases here the collector will need to buy copies second hand -- either in specialist stores or (as is more common nowadays) over the Internet.

Buying magazines and journals second hand
Buying magazines and journals second hand may be the only option for people that miss an issue of their favourite magazine / journal. Once the date of issue has passed these publications tend to be taken off the shelves and returned to the publisher. So, getting hold of old or back-dated copies here can be difficult -- even if a reader has only missed an issue by a couple of weeks.

This isn't generally an issue if the person interested in a magazine or journal is willing to look online for a second hand copy. Many people nowadays will sell on duplicates, unwanted copies and whole collections of magazines and journals. And, of course, for many collectors and dealers this is one of their primary methods of doing business.

As a buyer cannot actually see a magazine or journal when they buy online they may need to ask more questions of the seller. This is especially true if condition and quality are major issues. Most collectors, for example, want magazines and journals that are in a very good condition. The simplest way to find out about the quality and condition of an item for sale here is just to ask the seller!

Most sellers will be more than happy to give the necessary information so ask in detail about the condition of the magazine / journal. Ask if it is still stapled together, if any pages are missing, if anyone has written inside it or if there are any issues the seller needs to highlight. If at all possible -- especially if the magazine or journal has some potential value -- ask to see digital photos which will at least give a visual image of the condition and quality of the piece.
